In our second drive through the rural mountains of Uji City (Kyoto\nPrefecture, Japan) that I most<\/span> recently wrote about the other day in “Pleasant Little\nVillage in Uji, Part 2<\/a>”, after leaving that village we wound our way\nnorth for half an hour (for what turned out to be only a mile<\/span> and a half<\/span> as\nthe crow flies!) and had to stop when we came across some extremely vivid\nflowers at the end of someone's driveway.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't realize it until I went to check the photo times between the\nvillage and these flowers, to see how long it took between, that the first\nphoto on this post was actually the last photo I took<\/span> back in the\nvillage... it just happened to be of the same kind of flower. Just as pretty\nin both places.<\/p>\n\n

While we were hovering about the flowers with our cameras, I noticed<\/span> an\nelderly lady doing chores by the house looking at us with a strong<\/span> “what on\nearth?” look. I suspect<\/span> she hadn't seen many tall white guys at the end of\nher driveway. I called<\/span> out in a cheery<\/span> voice that we appreciated that her\nflowers were so photogenic, and she came down and we chatted for a while.<\/span> It turns<\/span> out that someone from Scandinavia had lived nearby about 17 years\nago; she gave his name and asked whether I knew<\/span> him. \ud83d\ude42 (I didn't<\/span>)<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that the next place over was a cafe,<\/span> so we stopped in for lunch...<\/p>\n\n

But sadly, being in the middle of nowhere, the cafe is open only on the weekend.\nThey did have ice cream, so we availed ourselves of that...<\/p>\n\n

The cafe is also the home and workshop of a lady<\/span> who does various kinds\nof art, such as stained-glass windows and metal sculptures, and some\noutbuildings are other workshops for her and her students, one of which is\nice-cream girl.<\/p>\n\n

(We were intrigued enough to head back the next weekend to try the\npizza, and had some Italian Fruit Pizza<\/b>. It had various<\/span> fruits,\nincluding bananas. It sounds<\/span> disgusting, but was amazing<\/i> to the\npoint that I actually<\/span> concentrated on it instead of the camera, so I have<\/span>\nno photographic record.... a deficiency<\/span> I intend<\/span> to remedy.)<\/p>\n\n

Like I said, it was the middle of nowhere, but there was a house<\/span> across the way...<\/p>\n\n

Inside the white triangle on the gable of the main building is the\ncharacter for “water”. I'll have to ask what that might mean when I go<\/span> back\nfor more pizza.<\/p>\n\n

Closer in toward the road, there was what appeared to be ruins of some sort, so yet another\nthing to ask about...<\/p>\n\n
