In “Pleasant\nLittle Village in Uji<\/a>” last month, I showed<\/span> photos from the edge of a\nsmall<\/span> remote village in Uji City (Kyoto Prefecture, Japan) of maybe a dozen<\/span>\nhouses scattered about. Today's photos are from the other edge of the\nvillage...<\/p>\n\n\n

Considering the similar shots in “Exquisite Beauty\nGrowing Like a Weed<\/span> by the Side of the Road<\/a>”\nand\n“Scenes From Rural Japan: Mountain Village in Uji City<\/a>”\n(both from a trip<\/span> the week prior\nto the one that produced today's photos), I'm probably<\/span> overdoing these a\nbit,<\/span> but I like<\/span> them and it's my blog, so here we are.<\/p>\n\n

I came back later with the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm to visit the group of purple flowers...<\/p>\n\n

One of the most interesting places for me was a house<\/span> that almost looked\nlike it was abandoned, but it still showed some signs of use, so it's\nprobably owned by someone who visits only every so often for farming and to\nlook after the place...<\/p>\n\n

At the right you can see a red mailbox, but it's not the house's\nmailbox, but a public<\/span> box for the village for sending letters out....<\/p>\n\n

(The Japanese post office does not pick up mail during home delivery, so\nto send a letter,<\/span> you must visit the post office or drop it off in one of\nthe many public mail boxes sprinkled about.)<\/p>\n\n

I'm at a loss to explain why there's a urinal<\/span> immediately under it.<\/p>\n\n

The part of the house facing the mailbox was a covered<\/span> area with the\nmain entrance and a bunch<\/span> of other stuff, such as the bench with onions\nseen in the first photo. Among other items in that general vicinity....<\/p>\n\n

This'll bring back memories (at least if you lived in Japan long enough\nago). I wonder<\/span> whether they still make this kind. The larger<\/span> compartment on\nthe left is where the clothes would be washed, and when done, you'd move\nthe whole sopping mess to the smaller compartment on the right (a small<\/span>\ncentrifuge) to get most of the water out before hanging to dry. It was more<\/span>\nconvenient than washing on a rock<\/span> at a river,<\/span> but only by a slim<\/span>\nmargin.<\/p>\n\n

The side of the house was also interesting...<\/p>\n\n

I believe that the wooden shutter in the center of the photo opens up,\nto turn into a sun<\/span> shade for a little<\/span> window from which one can sell things\n(likely produce). I'd also guess<\/span> that it predates vehicular traffic; the\nroad ends 15 yards further down, which itself is off of another road that\ndead ends. But 100 years<\/span> ago, a footpath<\/span> to Otsu City may well have gone\nthrough this area.<\/p>\n\n\n

I can't imagine how a mud wall can stand up to the elements decade after decade after decade, but they do. Mostly.<\/p>\n\n

Curvy roads often have large circular fisheye mirrors to help see\ntraffic around a bend<\/span> — you can see the back of one near the car in\nthe “Taking a Breather<\/span>” photo above, and in this old post<\/a> as\nwell — but sometimes people put little ones near their own driveway\nto help them pull out. It's difficult<\/span> to imagine that this remote dead-end\narea could have enough traffic to justify the need, but apparently it did\nbecause the bent thing above used to be the backing for a private<\/span> road-side\nmirror. I wonder<\/span> what caused it to get bent like that. Maybe a delivery<\/span>\ntruck backed into it?<\/p>\n\n
