Yesterday I posted a few pictures in Part 1<\/a> on a particularly<\/span> photogenic\nravine first seen in last week's “Scenes From Mountain Roads in\nNorthern Kyoto<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

This post is a bunch more, mostly without comment.<\/p>\n\n

While heading back down, I came within<\/span> a pace<\/span> and a half<\/span> of stepping on\nthis guy, scaring myself half to death when I saw<\/span> him below me. From his\ncoiled reaction a moment<\/span> later, I seem to<\/span> have had a similar<\/span> effect on him.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't know what kind of snake he was, but I gave<\/span> him a wide<\/span> berth,\nand he slithered off. He was about<\/span> two feet long.<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that he's a dreaded mamushi<\/i> pit viper<\/a>\n(\u30de\u30e0\u30b7), which I didn't<\/span> know to expect in the mountains. (I do<\/span> now.)\nIt has the most potent venom of any snake in Japan,\nbut while its bite can be fatal, it's not as deadly as the Amami\/Okinawa habu<\/i><\/a>\n(\u30cf\u30d6) because these mamushi tend to be physically smaller, so their bite\nis delivers a correspondingly<\/span> smaller amount of venom.<\/p>\n\n

But being bit by one would not<\/i> be fun. The most common<\/span> results\nare “MOF<\/a>”\n(multiple organ failure) and necrosis<\/a> of the area\/limb\nbitten, which can lead to amputation (if, at least, you recover from the\nfirst problem). Most cases require a\nmonth<\/span> of hospitalization<\/a>, but those young and strong can require\nless<\/a>, and, as I said,<\/span> some are\nfatal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie's great grandmother lost a leg<\/span> to an Amami habu<\/i> not long\nafter WWII, causing great family hardship during a time<\/span> when things were\nalready pretty hard to begin with, so I've learned to be wary when we go\ndown there, but I didn't<\/span> expect these mamushi<\/i> in the mountains up\nhere. They normally live in grasslands near a river,<\/span> I thought.<\/span> (My first\nintroduction to them was a warning<\/span> sign<\/a> I\ncame<\/span> across four years ago.) But now I'm getting paranoid... yesterday I\nwas<\/span> with Anthony and Gen playing in this fun river area<\/a> when I\nremembered<\/span> mamushi<\/i> and it suddenly wasn't so fun anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
