On the way to Pierre Nadeau's sword smithy<\/a> in May, we came across the photogenic\nZaobashi Bridge (\u8535\u738b\u6a4b<\/span><\/a>)\nin the rural mountains of Aridagawacho City, in Wakayama Prefecture.<\/p>\n\n

It's a short (160m) bare suspension bridge made of steel... steel grid\nplates that form the surface of the bridge, bolted on top of simple steel\nI-beams suspended with steel cables to even bigger steel cables draped over\ntwo steel towers. It makes<\/span> it quite easy to see how all the parts conspire\nagainst gravity. It's also photogenic<\/span>. The people<\/span> in the photo above were\nthe only ones to stop by while we were there.<\/p>\n\n

No one was around when we had first arrived, so I took<\/span> the opportunity\nto get a straight<\/span>-down shot with no one on it....<\/p>\n\n

I was using my Nikkor\n300mm f\/2<\/a> that I had<\/span> just picked up the previous\nday<\/a>, so I still<\/span> didn't know what I was<\/span> doing with it. These are all\nhandheld shots.<\/p>\n\n\n

You can see in the photos above that the bridge is also roped down to\nkeep it from floating away (or, perhaps, to keep its relatively light bulk\nfrom swaying in the wind).<\/p>\n\n

You can see that the floor plates are really just bolted to the I-beams,\nwhich are really just hanging there, so everything moves around as you walk\non it. It's slightly<\/span> unsettling at first when the whole thing ripples as\nyou walk. Also, you can see through the floor plates (which are a grid<\/span> of\nsteel) straight down to the river below. In the background of a few of these shots you can see a bright<\/span> tree...\none of the trees on the far bank was positively glowing with spine's new\ngrowth, an effect highlighted even further when the sun would clip it from\njust above the mountain behind it. I totally<\/span> didn't capture that feeling,\nbut I gave<\/span> it a shot.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n
