After climbing into and back out of a small<\/span> extinct volcano (as seen in\nlast month's “Descending Into a Volcanic<\/span> Crater<\/a>”), we were walking down\nthe mountain when we came across a guy<\/span> obviously looking for something, so\nwe asked what it was. It turns<\/span> out that he was looking for warabi<\/i>, a\nfern<\/span> whose shoots are edible. So we thought<\/span> we'd keep an eye out as we went\ndown...<\/p>\n\n

We eventually found the guy again and added our collection to his, for which he was thankful.<\/p>\n\n

Today while writing up this post, I couldn't<\/span> remember what this plant\nwas called, so I surfed<\/span> through the various entries on the Wikipedia page\nfor mountain vegetables (sansai<\/i><\/a>) and\nfound it as warabi<\/a>\n(Pteridium aquilinum<\/a>) only to read that it's\ncarcinogenic. Doh! I've had them and they're tasty, but perhaps I'll not\nseek them out next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
