To prepare, <span class='nobr'>I asked<\/span> Paul Barr to stand in for <span class='nobr'>a\nquick<\/span> test shot in the dim entry room, with soft light splashing in through\nthe door from the gloomy downpour outside.<\/p>\n\n<p>When I got home, instead of deleting the test shot <span class='nobr'>I started<\/span> to play\nwith it <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> in Lightroom, and found <span class='nobr'>a fairly<\/span> powerful image emerge as <span class='nobr'>I\npushed<\/span> it toward <span class='nobr'>a hard<\/span>-edged black &amp; white (heavy on the blacks,\ncontrast, and clarity).<\/p>\n\n<p>It reminded me of another test shot, this time from April's &#8220;<a\nclass='pt' href='\/blog\/2011-04-08\/1738'>Mountain Play with\nMonet and Friends<\/a>&#8221;, when <span class='nobr'>I asked<\/span> Arthur to hold my WhiBal for <span class='nobr'>a quick<\/span>\nlight test. <span class='nobr'>I have no<\/span> idea why <span class='nobr'>I started<\/span> to play with this one in Lightroom\nin the first place (normally <span class='nobr'>I just<\/span> use them to take <span class='nobr'>a white<\/span>-balance\nreading that <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> then apply to the other photos taken in the same light),\nbut <span class='nobr'>I find<\/span> something about it really striking...<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name=\"077324\" href='\/i\/JF7_077324.jpg'\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_077324_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"Cherished ( pretend he's holding, say, a great-grandfather's pocket watch ) -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2011 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i077324\"\ntitle=\"Cherished ( pretend he's holding, say, a great-grandfather's pocket watch ) -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2011 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm f\/2.5 &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>400 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.5, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a href='\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_077324.jpg'>map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href='\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_077324.jpg'>nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Cherished<\/span>\n<br\/>( pretend he's holding, say, a great-grandfather's pocket watch )\n<\/div>\n\n<p>This kinds of post processing isn't really my normal style, though I've\nsort of done it occasionally (<a\nhref='\/blog\/2011-06-04\/1790#081841'>here<\/a>, <a\nhref='\/blog\/2011-02-25\/1711'>here<\/a>, <a\nhref='\/blog\/2010-07-01\/1557#028817'>here<\/a>, and, of\ncourse, the <a href='\/blog\/2011-03-26\/1729'>camo\nduck<\/a>). I'll probably try it <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> more, though I'll have to be careful\nnot to overdo it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Kyoto friend St\u00e9phane Barbery uses this style often, to great effect,\nsuch as <a href='\/blog\/2009-10-26\/1343'>these <i>Jidai\nMatsuri<\/i> shots<\/a> from <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> years ago. <span class='nobr'>If you watch<\/span> <a\nhref='http:\/\/www.flickriver.com\/photos\/barbery\/'>his Flickr stream<\/a>,\nyou'll often see sets of captivating B&amp;W come by.<\/p>\n\n<p><i><a href='\/blog\/2011-06-22\/1804' class='quiet'>Continued here...<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While at the Shimyouin Temple the other day, I intended to ask permission to take a portrait of the priest and his wife.
