In “Exquisite Beauty Growing Like a Weed<\/span> by the Side of the Road<\/a>”\nthe other day, I noted<\/span> that while driving through a sparsely<\/span>-populated village deep in the mountains of Uji City south-east of Kyoto,\nwe made a stop<\/span> to check out a local<\/span> shrine we happened upon. The shrine's entrance gate appeared in yesterday's\n“Scenes From Rural Japan: Mountain Village in Uji City<\/a>” as well.<\/p>\n\n

The shrine has the name Kiyotakiguu (\u6e05\u7027\u5bae),<\/span> and is just a small<\/span> local shrine for the village, like any number of\nsimilarly unassuming local shrines and temples that have appeared on this blog (recent ones I can<\/span> recall offhand include\nthe Himuro shrine<\/a>,\nTakanawa Temple<\/a>,\nJuge Shrine<\/a>,\nOchiba Shrine<\/a>,\nHiyoshi Shrine<\/a>,\nNitenji Temple<\/a>,\nSokushouji Temple<\/a>, and\nToufuu Shrine<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

These unassuming local places are quite different from the large famous shrines and temples\nlike the Kongourinji Temple<\/a>,\nHeian Shrine<\/a>,\nSanzen-in Temple<\/a>,\nYoshiminedera<\/a>,\nEikando Temple<\/a>,\nYoshida Shrine<\/a>, and\nNanzen Temple<\/a>, but\neach has its own charms, and I enjoy<\/span> checking them out, the more remote the better.<\/p>\n\n

This one was a two-minutes walk up a winding<\/span> set of stairs up the side of a mountain.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

At the left you can see a small shed with blueish doors. Coming from the shed is a track<\/span> that leads up to the shrine, for some kind of conveyor\nto bring heavy things up and down...<\/p>\n\n

Once you get up there, you find a small<\/span> compound with minor buildings on\nthree sides and the main shrine building a bit<\/span> further up a rise<\/span> on the\nfourth side....<\/p>\n\n\n

Before heading up the stairs to the main shrine, you come across the water basin for ritual purification...<\/p>\n\n

The fence\/walls separating the main building from the rest of the compound were interesting, made of wood framing supported by angled stone buttresses,\nand topped with what must have been a very<\/span> heavy tile roof....<\/p>\n\n

I had the impression that stone was not known for its sheer strength,\nand I'd worry that these relatively-thin columns would snap off in a sharp<\/span>\nearthquake, rather than support the wall as they seem designed to do. I\ndunno.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Update<\/b>: Fr. Graham McDonnell (seen here<\/a>), who has been a priest<\/span> in Kyoto for\n50-something years, tells me that this is called a\nkamon-iri onigawara<\/i> (\u5bb6\u7d0b\u5165<\/span>\u308a\u9b3c\u74e6),<\/span> which I figure<\/span> literally means “gargoyle with a family<\/span> crest”. Frankly, this doesn't do anything to help me\nfigure out what to call it in English, but it's good to know the proper term in Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n

As is common with many local shrines, the shrine building itself was\nquite small, perhaps just one small room, though we couldn't tell for sure because it was closed up\nwhen we visited (but that didn't thwart an\nextremely active population of bees coming and going in great numbers. The inside<\/span> was probably filled with honey.)<\/p>\n\n

Also common with local shrines, the shrine building itself was protected\nunder an enclosing roof. In the shot<\/span> below, Paul Barr stands under the roof\nof the shrine, while just behind him the support for the protective\nstructure rises up and out of frame...<\/p>\n\n

The protective structure itself was in questionable shape...<\/p>\n\n

I suspect that local shrines have these protective structures because\nthey're cheaper than replacing the heavily-shingled roof. A rich and<\/span> famous\nshrine can afford to replace the roofs from time to time (such as this one<\/a>), but I suspect<\/span>\nit's much more a challenge<\/span> for a small<\/span> local place.<\/p>\n\n

But that's just a guess. I'm not sure<\/span> what to make of this shrine's\nroof... it looks like it's had some recent repairs...<\/p>\n\n

But one area seemed at the same time both new and old without any particular divide...<\/p>\n\n
