A scant fifteen seconds from the front door of Pierre Nadeau's\nSwordsmith<\/a> deep in the rural mountains of Japan's Wakayama Prefecture\nis a sweeping<\/span> view of “Aragishima” (commonly written \u3042\u3089\u304e\u5cf6,\nbut sometimes \u862d\u5cf6),<\/span> a set<\/span> of terraced rice paddies shaved from a hill<\/span>\nalmost completely encompased by the sweep of an almost-full-circle river\nbend.<\/p>\n\n

The paddies weren't in their most photogenic state when I visited<\/span>\nearlier this month, and the weather\/lighting situation while I was<\/span> there\ndidn't help. These photos were taken over the course of a couple<\/span> of days,\nso the lighting among them is all over the map. I like the<\/span> shot above\nbecause the little kids are watching the adult working, but the lighting is\nhorrible. This next shot, taken the previous afternoon, seems better, but\nthe lone worker tucked away at the far edge makes a less<\/span> compelling\nimage...<\/p>\n\n

I saw some amazing shots by a friend of Pierre while we were there. I'm sure there<\/span>\nare many better ones online than you'll find in this post (image search\n\nat Yahoo<\/a>\nand\nat Google<\/a>), but seedlings were being planted while I was<\/span> there, which made it much nicer for me, because I enjoy<\/span> the human element.<\/p>\n\n

But like I said, it's not in its most photogenic state. And the river<\/span>,\nwhich at times can be a powerful<\/span> wide gushing angry snake, was just a\nslight<\/span> trickle while we were there. Frankly, I like my<\/span> WhiBal<\/a>-capture shot better...\nthe mountains have a nice<\/span> feeling to them....<\/p>\n\n\n

The main spot to take pictures (where I took<\/span> all those above) is a viewing<\/span> platform beside a road<\/span> that\nruns in the mountains above the paddies, but among the foot paths in the\nsmall community further up the mountain, I found<\/span> a clearing<\/span> with benches\noffering a nice<\/span> view...<\/p>\n\n\n
