So, as evidenced by “Street Photography\n(Sort of) In Roppongi Hills<\/a>“ and its followups (parts two<\/a> and three<\/a>), I got a<\/span> new lens last week.\nSome have asked to see a photo<\/span> of me with it, so it's fortuitous that Kyoto\nfriend St\u00e9phane Barbery<\/a> (he of the oft-different artistic\nsense<\/a> and some killer\nFestival of the Ages<\/i> shots<\/a>, among much other) actually got a\nphoto<\/span> of me where I don't<\/span> think I look<\/span> horrible. He had been<\/span> laughing at me\nfor using the new lens, a circa<\/span> 1983 Nikon 300mm f\/2\n(“Nikkor ED 300mm f\/2 IF<\/i>”),<\/span> without a tripod,<\/span>\nand I guess<\/span> I was<\/span> laughing back.<\/p>\n\n

Normally I'm pretty pathetic in photos, which is why I prefer<\/span> to be behind the camera.<\/p>\n\n

The next day, Zak Braverman<\/a> (of Shakuhachi bamboo flute<\/a>\nand Gen's daddiness<\/a>\nfame) took a shot<\/span> of me where I had<\/span> hoped to come across relaxed, with the\nlens cradled in my arm for loving safety, but instead I look<\/span> like... I dunno.<\/span>..\nspaced out.<\/p>\n\n

But that's not the worst of it. After picking up the lens, I had my<\/span>\ncamera bag, a monopod<\/span> that I didn't<\/span> use much, a pouch<\/span> with my wallet, iPad,\netc., and the big heavy case for the lens, all in addition to the lens. It was so<\/span> much to lug around that I was<\/span> tempted to just head home, but I don't<\/span>\nget to Tokyo much, so didn't want to waste the opportunity, so lugged it\nall around as I wandered<\/span> the Roppongi area of Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n

I felt ridiculous and self-conscious enough with the big lens, but\nlugging all that stuff around as well, strapped in various kludgy ways to\nmy body.... wow, I had to<\/span> just jettison all sense of shame and\nembarrassment. And it turns<\/span> out my feelings were justified, as I see<\/span> in some\npics that the lady of this couple<\/a> took,\nand the guy then sent to me...<\/p>\n\n\n
