{"id":176,"date":"2006-04-09T23:28:01","date_gmt":"2006-04-09T14:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-04-09\/176"},"modified":"2007-06-30T20:27:57","modified_gmt":"2007-06-30T11:27:57","slug":"heian-shrine-in-the-snow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-04-09\/176","title":{"rendered":"Heian Shrine in the Snow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nYesterday, Fumie and I went to an event at the Heian Shrine where they had\nlive viola\/guitar music while you could stroll around looking at their\ncherry blossoms, all lit up by hundreds of flood lights. <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> have my\ncamera with me, but most of the tens of thousands of others who were there\ndid. <span class='nobr'>It was very<\/span> crowded, unfortunately, just this side of oppressively so.\n(At about $15 per person, it wouldn't surprise me if they grossed at least\nhalf <span class='nobr'>a million<\/span> dollars just this weekend alone.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIt was beautiful. <span class='nobr'>I'd been inside<\/span> the shrine's huge garden area (<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?t=k&amp;ll=35.016062,135.782411&amp;spn=0.003866,0.006748\">map<\/a>)\nonly two other times, both after relatively rare heavy snowfalls (both\n2005, one in <a href=\"http:\/\/pic.regex.info\/amf\/2005-12-22\/10\">December<\/a>\nand one in <a href=\"http:\/\/pic.regex.info\/amf\/2005-02-02\/3\">February<\/a>).\nThose post-snowfall visits hadn't left me with the impression that there\nwere many cherry trees, but wow, they were <b>everywhere<\/b>, in many\ndifferent varieties, from pure white to the deepest blood pink. (The\nprevious visits hadn't left me with the impression that so many people\ncould fit, either; previously, we'd had the place essentially to\nourselves.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nNot having had my camera yesterday, <span class='nobr'>I offer<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> pictures from the\nsnowstorm <a href=\"\/blog\/2005-12-22\/116\">last\nDecember<\/a>, which was the most snow Kyoto had seen in the last 50 years:\n\n<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"ic\"><a\nhref=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-12-22_15:51.53__04673.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_4673.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"526\"\nalt=\"Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2006 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl\"\nborder=\"0\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"i4673\"\ntitle=\"Snowfall at the Heian Shrine, Kyoto Japan.
