This post picks up from “Day 2: Bridge Bicycle Ride Part 2<\/a>”, about\nour short trip to Imabari<\/a> earlier in the month. After spending the day\nriding bikes across a long<\/span> suspension bridge<\/a>, we made the drive south to the city of\nMatsuyama, to visit the oldest (or one of the oldest) hot springs in Japan, the Dougo Onsen<\/a>. It's mentioned<\/span> in literature more than 1,200 years old, but the building itself is brand spanking new, having been built a scant<\/span> 117 years ago.<\/p>\n\n

There's some legend related to the creation of Japan and some rock that\nsome mythical\/legend dude danced on..... and now you can pour water on the rock with a\nlong<\/span> ladle, for some reason.... (???)<\/p>\n\n

We got a course of services whereby we could have a small<\/span> private room for an hour, using it to get ready for the bath,\nand to have some tea and sweets after. The room was<\/span> on the third floor, overlooking the second floor roof and\nopen to the sounds of bath and food and relaxing...<\/p>\n\n

For reference, the railing seen left of center, in the distance between\nthe two parts of the building, is exactly that one that Fumie is next to in\nthe first photo of this post.<\/p>\n\n

The light in the fading sky was really nice, but made nicer by the\napparently strong natural vignette of the Nikkor 50mm f\/1.4<\/a> when\nit's used wide open. The following<\/span> shot loses all its character when I\nenable<\/span> the profiled lens corrections in Lightroom (so I left<\/span> them disabled)...<\/p>\n\n

We then went for our bath, Fumie to hers and Anthony and I to<\/span> ours. It was okay<\/span>, but frankly, nothing particularly special. Sort of boring.<\/p>\n\n

Returning to our room, we found tea and Bocchan Dango<\/i> sweets waiting.<\/p>\n\n

The writer of a famous 1906 novel, Bocchan<\/a>, liked this\nonsen (hot springs), and now they make ample use of his name and works everywhere, including in the name of the sweets.<\/p>\n\n
