I often make the short drive up to the Shogunzuka overlook to catch the sunset<\/a> or just\nenjoy the nice view<\/a>,\nbut it's usually to the public overlook, and only a few<\/span> times to the actual Shogunzuka\ngardens<\/a> next door (500 yen to enter... about $6). I should<\/span> go more,\nbecause it's quite pretty in its own right, and the views are wonderful.\nLast time I went<\/span> was about two years ago when my friend Ram was in\ntown<\/a>. I went today<\/span>, and though it was quite pretty, you could\ndefinitely tell it was two weeks deeper into spring than that previous\ntrip, with more green and less blossoms.<\/p>\n\n

The “Temple Gardens” photo is a bit<\/span> misleading, in that there's plenty of color\nunder the canopy. I haven't<\/span> looked too much at my photos from the day yet,\nbut here are a few.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

Well, it's still not in the same class as “Half Bloom<\/a>” or “Almost Lost<\/a>”, but I guess<\/span>\nI'm just a sucker<\/span> for the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125's macro\nbokeh<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Back to the views, there was indeed a lot<\/span> of spring green, and a class<\/span> that had apparently hiked up was eating their bento on one of the observation decks...<\/p>\n\n\n

From the deck the kids were on, I could<\/span> see the big shrine gate near my house, though it looks like a toy<\/span> in this shot...<\/p>\n\n

This is a nicer shot than a similar one<\/a> I took<\/span> in 2008. And for something<\/span> completely different, compare it to this view<\/a> from 2006.<\/p>\n\n

I love how the distance compresses things.... it's hard to believe by\nlooking at the photo above, but that area is more “city” than not. For\nexample, in the photo above, to the immediate right of the orange gate,\nthere's a reddish<\/span> taxi. I was standing<\/span> at that exact spot when I took<\/span> this picture<\/a>, and\nin looking at my photo proximity\nsearch for that spot<\/a>, you'll see a mix<\/span> of city and nature. That's one\nthing I like<\/span> so much<\/a>\nabout where I live.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I headed<\/span> back to my car at the public overlook area, and came\nacross a different<\/span> set of kids on a class<\/span> hike, having their lunch in the\nsame spot from which we\nwatched a helicopter<\/span> take off<\/a> a few<\/span> years ago...<\/p>\n\n

This was Anthony's class, here on a field<\/span> trip. Knowing he'd be here, I came\nup<\/span> to catch a glimpse<\/span> of him in his own world that's separated from ours at home. But as soon<\/span> as I got<\/span> close, kids started yelling “Your dad's\nhere!<\/i>”, so, so much for sneaking a peek.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

How he looks in this picture makes me think he's taken the next step past last year's Tipping Point<\/i><\/a>. They grow up so fast.<\/p>\n\n

He was actually happy to have me there, I was glad<\/span> to hear, and asked\nthat I stick<\/span> around for no apparent reason other than he liked the idea\nthat I was<\/span> around. Sweet. I wonder<\/span> how long that will last.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie had made a killer bento<\/a> for lunch, but for a\nsnack<\/span> after, they were allowed to bring 200 yen worth of candy (about\n$2.50, which is really quite a lot,<\/span> I thought<\/span>). A lot of<\/span> trading goes on.<\/p>\n\n

However, it was cut short by rain. I could<\/span> see the rain approaching on\nradar on my iPhone, and then look out and see a wave<\/span> of rain approaching in\nthe distance. After letting the teacher know, I walked<\/span> over to Anthony and\npointed at it and asked whether he knew what it was. He didn't, so I told<\/span>\nhim it was rain, and that he might want to start getting his stuff in\norder. He didn't really believe me, but the rain hit about two minutes\nlater...<\/p>\n\n\n

They were more prepared for the rain than I, so I went<\/span> home.
