{"id":1755,"date":"2011-04-25T19:43:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-25T10:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2011-04-25\/1755"},"modified":"2011-04-25T19:43:54","modified_gmt":"2011-04-25T10:43:54","slug":"my-new-lightroom-plugin-as-close-to-layers-in-lightroom-as-youre-going-to-get","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2011-04-25\/1755","title":{"rendered":"My New Lightroom Plugin: as Close to &#8220;Layers in Lightroom&#8221; as You&#8217;re Going To Get"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1755'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In my previous post, about <a\nhref='\/blog\/2011-04-23\/1753'>factually-incorrect hype<\/a>\nof <span class='nobr'>a photo<\/span>-editing application that claimed it provided &#8220;Layers in\nLightroom&#8221;, <span class='nobr'>I noted<\/span> that an idea had come to me to almost actually provide\n&#8220;Layers in Lightroom&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had a proof-of-concept version out to friends that evening, but it's\ntaken <span class='nobr'>a couple<\/span> of days to spiff it up enough for <span class='nobr'>a beta<\/span> release.<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-left:5em; font-size:120%'>\n&mdash; &nbsp; <a href='\/blog\/lightroom-goodies\/layers'>Jeffrey's &#8220;Photoshop Layers&#8221; Lightroom Plug<\/a> &nbsp; &mdash;\n<\/p>\n\n<p>It's slow and a bit kludgy &mdash; definitely <i>not<\/i> &#8220;Layers in\nLightroom&#8221; &mdash; but unlike other external-editor solutions like the\nhyped app, this plugin allows for a <b>non destructive<\/b> workflow.<\/p>\n\n<p>With it, you build a <b>persistent link<\/b> between images in Lightroom\nand layers in <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> Photoshop PSD that's added to your Lightroom catalog. <span class='nobr'>You can edit<\/span> that new PSD pretty much as you like... add new layers,\nresize, crop, transform, mask, add text layers, run actions and filters,\nedit pixels, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the key here is that <b>if you make subsequent edits to the\noriginals in Lightroom, those edits are reflected through the Photoshop\nedits and back into the composite in Lightroom.<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Some might call this a &#8220;game changer&#8221; :-). <span class='nobr'>I'm not sure<\/span> I'd go that far,\nbut it'll sure be handy at times.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href='\/blog\/lightroom-goodies\/layers'>plugin\npage<\/a> explains it more, but all in all, this plugin might be described as:<\/p>\n\n<table>\n<tr valign='middle'>\n<td width=\"20\"><\/td>\n<td style='font-size:400%; font-family:times'>&#8220;<\/td>\n<td><span class='nobr'>A slow<\/span> but mostly-effective way to get <span class='nobr'>a somewhat<\/span> layer-like experience in <span class='nobr'>a Lightroom<\/span>\nnon-destructive workflow by using Photoshop as an external rendering engine.<\/td>\n<td style='font-size:400%; font-family:times'>&#8221;<\/td>\n<\/tr><\/table>\n\n<p>It's still very beta, so I'm looking for feedback of all kinds,\nincluding how you find it useful, where it's not quite enough to be useful,\netc.<\/p>\n\n<p>How much I work on this in the future depends on the kind of feedback <span class='nobr'>I get.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>If you think<\/span> it'll be useful for\nyou, let me know, and if you think it's <span class='nobr'>a waste<\/span> of time, let me know that too. (The first reply <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> from the\nfirst group of friends that <span class='nobr'>I released<\/span> it to was &#8220;not worth the effort&#8221;, but <span class='nobr'>I disagreed,<\/span> so here we are.)<\/p>\n\n<p>Frankly, the method I've come up with for this plugin could be used with\n<i>Perfect Layers<\/i> (and other editing applications) if some\nrelatively-small hooks were added to them and their companion Lightroom\nplugins, and so if OnOne is watching, here's your chance to have your\nproduct actually come close to living up to its hype.
