I've covered the first day of our short trip to Imabari City earlier this month\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>),\nand one event from the third day (a visit<\/span> to the thrilling<\/i> Towel Museum,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>), so now I'd like to start filling in the second day of the trip.<\/p>\n\n

It started with the breakfast buffet at our hotel, the Imabari International\nHotel<\/a>. But only the<\/span> non-dieting non-ballerinas in our party opted to partake, so it was just Anthony and me for breakfast,\nas Fumie suffered for her art....<\/p>\n\n

We made our way to Sunrise Itoyama<\/a> (\u30b5\u30f3\u30e9\u30a4\u30ba\u7cf8\u5c71),<\/span> a business<\/span> near the foot of the bridge\nwhere, among other things, you can rent bicycles for a mere<\/span> 500 yen\/day (about $6\/day) and ride along the 50+ kilometers of the shimanami\nkaido<\/i><\/a>, a series<\/span> of bridges hopping over islands to connect Honshu and Shikoku, two of the main four islands of Japan.\nThere are apparently rental stations dotting the length, and you can pick up and drop off at any of them.<\/p>\n\n

Moments after arriving, we were besieged by a kind<\/span> but overfriendly\nphotographer who insisted on walking us through the bike-registration\nroutine and then taking our portrait at a prime<\/span> location he shared with us. We were made<\/span> uncomfortable by the socially-inappropriate level of his\napproach, but he wasn't trying to sell or get anything... it was clearly\nborn from true (but unfiltered) kindness, so we went with it.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, I couldn't have gotten the first one myself, but I don't<\/span>\nthink I could<\/span> have gotten the second one either, as Anthony's smile\nreflects the odd\/fun\/silly situation we were in (to Anthony's glee, Mr.\nOokubo was barking posing instructions at a rapid<\/span> pace), and is not an\nexpression I could<\/span> have elicited.<\/p>\n\n

And then we were off, with the trip starting up a long<\/span> spiral bike\/pedestrian bridge that gently brings you up to bridge level...<\/p>\n\n

The wind was blowing and it was cool, but having just biked up a gentle<\/span>\nbut non-stop slope for about 1km, the balance was fine.<\/p>\n\n

The big suspension cables come right down beside you, so you get some close-up views that one doesn't normally get...<\/p>\n\n\n

The bridge is about 4km (2½ miles) long, though technically it's three separate (but seamlessly-connected) bridges. We took our<\/span> time and enjoyed it\n(though sometimes I took<\/span> a bit<\/span> too much time, which was perhaps less enjoyable for Fumie and Anthony\n\nthan for me \ud83d\ude42 )...<\/span>\n\n<\/p>\n\n
