For example, consider this crop from the photo\nabove:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_077369a_sm.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"407\"\nalt=\"Mottled Yuck! &amp;#8220;Camera Standard&amp;#8221; profile that comes with Lightroom 3 -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2011 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i077369a\"\ntitle=\"Mottled Yuck! &amp;#8220;Camera Standard&amp;#8221; profile that comes with Lightroom 3 -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2011 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Mottled Yuck!<\/span>\n<br\/>&#8220;Camera Standard&#8221; profile that comes with <span class='nobr'>Lightroom 3<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Those mottled magenta splotches are not on the flower; they're <span class='nobr'>a bug<\/span> in Lightroom's camera profiles for the <span class='nobr'>D3\/D700\/D300.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>(The rest of this post is written from <span class='nobr'>a Lightroom<\/span> perspective, but the concepts apply to Photoshop's <i>Adobe Camera Raw<\/i>\nmodule as well.)<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-bottom:0'>Lightroom's &#8220;<b>camera profiles<\/b>&#8221; are\ninternal recipes for how to convert the camera's raw hardware-specific\nsensor data into <span class='nobr'>a color<\/span> image. <span class='nobr'>The camera<\/span> itself has this built in as part\nof its JPEG engine, but that's not used if you shoot raw because the whole\npoint of shooting raw is to give you control over the conversion process\nlater. Thus, each raw converter (Lightroom, Aperture, ACR, Nikon View NX, etc.)\nhas the latitude to make the conversion itself, as it sees fit.<\/p>\n\n<div style='padding-top:0; padding-right:0' class='img_right'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr\/LrCameraProfiles.png\" width=\"329\" height=\"290\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iLrCameraProfiles\"\nstyle=\"position:relative; right:-32px\"\/><\/div>\n\n<p>In Lightroom's case, it gives you <span class='nobr'>a choice<\/span> from <span class='nobr'>a number<\/span> of &#8220;recipes&#8221;\n(profiles) for how the basic conversion to color image data is to be done. <span class='nobr'>In the Develop<\/span> module, at the bottom of the right-side panel, you'll find\nthe\n<b>Camera Calibration<\/b> section, and a\n&#8220;Profile&#8221; selector that\ncontains items such as\n<span class='nobr'>&#8220;Adobe Standard&#8221;,<\/span>\n<span class='nobr'>&#8220;Camera Vivid&#8221;,<\/span>\n<span class='nobr'>&#8220;Camera Standard&#8221;,<\/span>\n<span class='nobr'>&#8220;Camera Portrait&#8221;, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>The ones with &#8220;Camera&#8221; in the name try to mimic the\nparticular look and feel of the camera's own JPEG engine, with\n&#8220;Camera Standard&#8221; obviously being the profile to match what the\ncamera does when it's not in any kind of special-look mode.<\/p>\n\n<p>I think &#8220;Adobe Standard&#8221; is the one that Lightroom uses if you\ndon't tell it otherwise, but it's so generic and its results so &#8220;blah&#8221; that\nas <span class='nobr'>a matter<\/span> of course <span class='nobr'>I apply<\/span>\n<span class='nobr'>&#8220;Camera Standard&#8221;<\/span>\nautomatically to all my\nimages as part of the Lightroom import process. This has worked great for me for\nyears, but every so often... maybe every 5,000&ndash;10,000 photos or so,\nI'll come across <span class='nobr'>a situation<\/span> like that shown above, where there are clearly errors\nin how Lightroom is processing the image.<\/p>\n\n<p>The magnitude of the problem seems closely\ntied to the white-balance setting, so sometimes it was easy enough to make go away....\nbut sometimes not, and the photo above is one such example. <span class='nobr'>It happened<\/span> so rarely that <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> bother to investigate, but <span class='nobr'>I really<\/span> wanted to post this\nflower because it's <span class='nobr'>a clear<\/span> candidate for membership in the\nVoigtl\u00e4nder &#8220;<a href='\/blog\/2011-04-11\/1743' class='pt'>Exploring the Edge of Creamy Macro Bokeh<\/a>&#8221; club. <span class='nobr'>I'd come across<\/span> the flower by the side of the road during\nthe &#8220;<a class='pt' href='\/blog\/2011-04-08\/1738'>Mountain Play with Monet and Friends<\/a>&#8221;\nouting <span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> ago.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, <span class='nobr'>I asked<\/span> around and was directed to the Adobe forum linked above, and <i>voila<\/i>...<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_077369b_sm.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"407\"\nalt=\"Smooth as a Baby's Bottom with the new &amp;#8220;Camera Standard&amp;#8221; This is just <span class='nobr'>a gut<\/span> feeling and <span class='nobr'>I need<\/span> to do more research,\nincluding reading the entire forum thread.
