Here are some more pictures from the first two stops during our\nessentially all-day drive at the start of our short but\nphotographically-satisfying trip to Imabari City (Ehime Prefecture, Japan)\nat the start of the month. It was a<\/span> trip which included an attraction so\nthrilling, the Towel Museum :-), that a single<\/span> post couldn't contain its full measure of win:\npart 1<\/a>, part 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Many of the photos on today's post are variations of pics seen on “On The Road to\nImabari<\/a>”, which I had<\/span> prepared in haste that first night from the\nhotel.<\/p>\n\n

I couldn't decide which view I liked best of the highway rest-stop\npicnic area that I led<\/span> the earlier post with, so here's another view I\nlike.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

We'd stopped for lunch at the westbound Seto parking area of the Sanyo\nHighway near Okayama because we knew had a cheap<\/span> cafe with home-cooked\ntaste, and it didn't disappoint. It was a<\/span> pleasant area fairly high up on a\nhill.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

Looking over the edge of the dropoff, I found<\/span> farmland and an orchard of some kind completely bare except for\na splash<\/span> of pink in three trees...<\/p>\n\n

The company that runs the highway reststops is apparently too cheap to\nmake a sign<\/span> that says “Seto-Area Specialty Burger!”, so they have a\ngeneric<\/span> “Special-For-This-Area Burger!” sign...<\/p>\n\n

It's at this rest stop that I started to realize the potential of\nthe Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm<\/a>\nfor the kind of photos I wrote<\/span> about the other day in\n“Exploring the Edge of Creamy Macro Bokeh with Lily of the Nile<\/a>”.\nJust compare the next two shots, noticing both aperture and focus point that goes into each...<\/p>\n\n\n

I just love the creaminess of the second one. Here's a crop<\/span> from a\nsimilar<\/span> one, but with the focus more toward the back, leaving the yellow anther a\nbit<\/span> more defined (but still out of focus). Now, nothing is in focus except\nfor an abstract, razor-thin ring around the blossom...<\/p>\n\n

Not bad for a highway rest stop.<\/p>\n\n

Our route would take us on a 12-year-old highway that hops for 30 miles\nacross bridges and islands between Honshu (the big main island of Japan)\nand Shikoku. Many of the islands are mountain peaks jutting from the water,\nand the first one offered a road<\/span> to the top where we could enjoy the view....<\/p>\n\n

The community on the low flat area next to the water certainly caught our eye....<\/p>\n\n

Of course, this immediately brought to mind the tsunami that had wiped\nout hundreds of miles of coastal communities in eastern Japan. After having\nseen videos of the unrelenting previously-inconceivable destruction of\ntsunami, it was now all to easy to imagine this entire community being\nwiped off the face of the earth in a few<\/span> scant minutes.<\/p>\n\n

This water is not the wide-open ocean, but a relatively<\/span> small and\nwell-protected inland sea, so perhaps tsunami are not a worry<\/span> for this\nparticular village, but one must wonder about similar villages across the\nthousands of miles of coastline that are<\/i> at risk that the tsunami\nmissed last time.<\/p>\n\n\n

In between the two views, looking almost due south, is the fishing port\nfeatured in Low Tide<\/a> and the photo that followed. In this less<\/span> extreme\nview at 50mm (rather than 14mm or 420mm), I just love<\/span> the layers of islands\nand mountains on the horizon....<\/p>\n\n

There was a tree of some sort with vivid pink blossoms, which appeared\nin the earlier post as “Mommy,\nDaddy, and Baby Blossom<\/a>”. I was into<\/span> the “creamy edge-of-focus” thing,\nso was trying various ways to capture something as the blossoms flopped\naround in the breeze. Here are two examples whose difference in focus and\nangle is ever so slight, but which have quite different feels...<\/p>\n\n
