On the family outing to some nearby still-snowy mountains<\/a> the\nother day, we noticed that the maple trees are starting to bud, with an odd\nrust-colored fringe...<\/p>\n\n

Up close, it was easy to see what was happening...<\/p>\n\n

Elsewhere along the drive we found a tree<\/span> with big, pink buds.... likely plum.<\/p>\n\n\n

I don't know for sure whether they're plum, but it's likely because we're well into\nplum-blossom season. Even two weeks ago another Kyoto blogger posted\nabout plum blossoms in Gion<\/a>, and in prior years I've posted about them\nas early as late\nJanuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The plum-blossom season winds down early<\/a>, just\nin time<\/a> to make\nway for cherry blossoms to\nhave center stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Plum blossoms are usually pink... depending on the variety, anywhere from a faint<\/span> whitish pink, to deep, rich, retina-searing day-glow pink. But perhaps<\/span> there are true white plum as well, as I saw<\/span> a tree<\/span> with white blossoms\nat Shouzan<\/a> during yesterday's outing with Vaughn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

While on the subject of trees, here's one more item from the family\nouting the other day, I noticed<\/span> one tree that definitely stood apart from the rest...<\/p>\n\n
