World-traveler Vaughn\nHart<\/a> was in Kyoto today, and we got together to enjoy some of the\nphotographic delights of Kyoto. He's a user<\/span> of one of my plugins<\/a> and so had\ncontacted me when he realized our paths might cross, but it turns out that\nhe hadn't read my blog, so had no real idea about who I am<\/span> or what it's\nlike around here (and so had no specific ideas about what he preferred to see while here).\nSo, I thought<\/span> a random<\/span> drive in the mountains might be nice, to see what we discover.<\/p>\n\n

The susuki<\/i> (“Japanese pampas grass”) ubiquitous in the\nmountains in winter is starting to fade, but still as pretty and elusive as ever...<\/p>\n\n

I've tried to photograph it on many (dozens of) occasions, but little comes of it...\nit's so hard (for me) to capture. It seems<\/span> this is the first post where I even<\/span> mention the name. I do recall<\/span> it's appeared on this spectacular shot<\/a>,\nbut mostly what I get<\/span> looks like this<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the stems were getting un-fluffy, and perhaps that made things easier...<\/p>\n\n\n

Driving some more, we stopped in at one of the many temples dotting the\nmountains. Like the “Ice\nRoom” Temple<\/a> I posted<\/span> about earlier in the month, most of these temples\nare simple and unassuming, not for tourists, but to serve the local folk.<\/p>\n\n

The one we stopped by today, the Toufuu\nShrine<\/a> (\u9053\u98a8\u795e\u793e),<\/span> is no exception. Wikipedia notes that it dates back to 920.<\/p>\n\n

When I realized that our random path would bring us near the “Yama no Ie Hasegawa”\nrestaurant<\/a> I wrote<\/span> about late last year, I was excited<\/span> to visit again,\nbut it turns out that they're closed on Tuesdays. Bummer.<\/p>\n\n

Still, there are logging trails in the area, so we left the car at the restaurant and took a walk.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

We eventually were treated to what would have been a great<\/span> view of a\nvery<\/span> distant spread out Kyoto, but it was very hazy, so I didn't<\/span> bother\nwith a picture.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

We had time to head across town and swing by Nishimura Stone Carvers<\/a> for a look.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

In one far corner they were working on setting up a new<\/span> piece, including\nthe 72-year-old third-generation current patriarch of the family (wearing a hat<\/span> in the background of this picture)..... <\/p>\n\n

I've chatted with him on occasion, and thought I had<\/span> written a post<\/span>\nabout him specifically, but I don't<\/span> see it now, so it must be still on the\nto-do list. I have<\/i> posted about his oldest son<\/a> working a\nstone<\/span> in the shop. In fact, the stone lantern he was working on in that post\nwas now in the back garden, still looking too new to be desirable...<\/p>\n\n
