I've still got lots of photos yet to go through from our trip to Toyama\nPrefecture<\/a> (a few<\/span> hours north of Kyoto) more than a year<\/span> ago. At the time<\/span> I noted<\/span> that it was really snowy, but I need<\/span> to tone the description\ndown after the massive snowstorms in the US Midwest and East Coast this\nyear.<\/p>\n\n

Still, it was a lot<\/span><\/a>\nof snow for us, and really\npretty<\/a>, with visits to historic and picturesque villages of Gokayama<\/a> and Shirakawago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It was snowing heavily in the afternoon of the third day of the trip, as\nit had been all day<\/a>,\nso we didn't venture too far out, but we did take a short<\/span> drive on a road<\/span>\nthrough a steep<\/span> valley, overlooking a river.<\/span> Much of the road was protected\nby a snow<\/span> roof with one open side...<\/p>\n\n\n

This was convenient because we could stop pretty much anywhere and still\nenjoy the view from the protection of the roof.<\/p>\n\n

It sort of reminds me of Kyoto's Bridge to Nowhere<\/a>, though from the other end of the history spectrum.<\/p>\n\n

I guess I was enamored with the sight... I took enough<\/span> pictures of it. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

A bit further along was a non-missing bridge...<\/p>\n\n

This is the same bridge featured from a different<\/span> perspective in what is one of my all-time favorite photos: Bridge Over Icy Water<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

While we were there in the darkening dusk, a boat<\/span> slowly plied the frozen waters, making it seems all the more cold...<\/p>\n\n

It was still snowing very heavily and getting darker, so the boat was difficult to see. Perhaps this is a “you had to be there” situation, but I really<\/span> like this next shot:<\/p>\n\n

Nothing really stands out at first, so it's almost as if it's just a\nsmudge,<\/span> but then you see the waves from the boat, then the boat, then\neventually (if you're in not too bright a room<\/span>) other details emerge from\nthe fog, such as the line of the road across the top of the frame. The engineer<\/span> in me wants to lock onto specific, concrete things, but I guess<\/span>\nsome other facet enjoys the lack of it in this photo.<\/p>\n\n

Next to the red bridge were the support towers of the bridge it apparently replaced,\nunlike the first non-bridge in this post, also missing its entire road bed...<\/p>\n\n

Almost no one was around in this storm, but surprisingly, a car<\/span> actually took the bridge while we were there...<\/p>\n\n
