On the outing last fall with Paul Barr into the mountains north of Kyoto\nthat produced “Kyoto Mountain Restaurant\n'Yama no Ie Hasegawa'<\/a>” and “Carpet of Yellow at the Iwato\nOchiba Shrine<\/a>”, we first made a detour<\/span> on a small<\/span> path even deeper into\nthe middle of nowhere to stop into a remote<\/span> village I'd spotted on a map,<\/span>\nto check out its shrine. There's certainly appeal to the big, rich, fancy\nshrines and temples like the one we<\/a> live<\/a> near<\/a>, but I find<\/span> a certain<\/span>\nappeal in simple, local ones as well (like this<\/a> and this<\/a>), so I like<\/span> to pop\nin to check them out when I notice<\/span> them on the map.<\/p>\n\n

There wasn't much there but a small stage with an ornate roof, the\nentire of which was protected by a big<\/span> ugly corrugated roof. The ornate<\/span> roof didn't look particularly old, but I suppose<\/span> it must have been to merit\nthe protection.<\/p>\n\n

The ornate roof had a lot of wood carving, done perhaps without much\nskill, but clearly with a lot<\/span> of love...<\/p>\n\n

My mom is a skilled wood carver, so random carvings around the house are\nmuch better than these, but like I said,<\/span> they have a certain<\/span> appeal....<\/p>\n\n\n

The shrine's stonework wasn't something you'd be likely to find at Nishimura Stonecarvers<\/a>,\nbut they share an appeal with the wood carvings...<\/p>\n\n

Despite such a remote feeling of the area, it was pretty important in\nthe history of Kyoto; because it kept the coolest during the summer, it's\nwhere winter ice was stored during the summer. The shrine's name means “Ice\nRoom”, being that's the name for the area.<\/p>\n\n
