Wrapping up the posts about our short end-of-the-year trip to\nShoudoshima Island several hours south of Kyoto, the third day started for\nme at 4am with the moonrise picture<\/a> I posed<\/span>\nthe other day, then the cold and windy morning's pretty but unspectacular sunrise...<\/p>\n\n

Being that it wasn't raining like yesterday, we thought we'd give yesterday's “Angel Road” another try...<\/p>\n\n\n

The wind was strong and fun, but it was nothing compared to\nthe wind a few<\/span> years ago<\/a> on Amami.<\/p>\n\n

We went back up to the overlook and got another family picture, much better than\nthe one I posted<\/span> yesterday<\/a> from the same spot....<\/p>\n\n

We then headed to one of the many olive-related attractions, an olive\norchard \/ tourist attraction to see empty olive trees and a fake<\/span>\nwindmill....<\/p>\n\n

We heard that Kyoto had gotten quite a bit<\/span> of snow the previous day, and\nwas forecast for more this evening, so I was<\/span> a bit<\/span> worried about the drive\nhome. Not thinking<\/span> I needed<\/span> snow tires for the drive south, I didn't<\/span> have\nthem, and so thoughts of having to abandon the car<\/a>\ncaused worry.<\/p>\n\n

The worries increased when my car navigation system informed us that the\nhighway was closed beyond the Kyoto-South exit. We intended<\/span> to exit there\nanyway, but it was worrisome to imagine enough snow in Kyoto (which gets\nvery little snow to begin with) to justify the closure.<\/p>\n\n

Oddly, there was virtually no snow until just a few<\/span> miles from the exit,\nthen suddenly there was some inch or so of accumulation and more snow\nfalling, but nothing to fret over. Still, everyone had to exit, but it was\nremarkably smooth and I used<\/span> my knowledge as a local<\/span> to avoid most of the\nextra traffic as we made our way across town toward our place.<\/p>\n\n

But then the snow and the traffic got much worse, very quickly. Everyone\nshoved off the highway who wanted to continue east had to funnel through\nonly two open roads over the mountains to Otsu, both of which were hilly,\ncurvy, and packed as a parking<\/span> lot.... and our place is on a feeder<\/span> to one\nof them. By the time<\/span> we were half a mile<\/span> from our place, my delight at the\neasy exit had turned into worry about slipping and sliding again, and for\nthe last quarter mile I was<\/span> downright scared that we'd get stuck\n(albeit with an easy walk home), smash something, or be smashed.<\/p>\n\n

But in the end we made it fine, an impressive two hours even from Himeji,\nand I was<\/span> glad that we'd opted for a relatively<\/span> early ferry. Anthony and I went<\/span>\nout and had a snowball<\/span> fight, and the snow made for a fun<\/span> New Year's Day,\nas reported in\n“When You Tempt Fate, Sometimes You Lose<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
