{"id":1686,"date":"2010-12-31T20:12:18","date_gmt":"2010-12-31T11:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2010-12-31\/1686"},"modified":"2010-12-31T20:12:18","modified_gmt":"2010-12-31T11:12:18","slug":"one-week-as-a-microcosm-for-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2010-12-31\/1686","title":{"rendered":"One Week as a Microcosm for the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1686'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This past week has made quite an appropriate ending for the year.<\/p>\n\n<p>I'm grateful for generally good health, in the grand scheme of things: <span class='nobr'>I\ndon't<\/span> have Alzheimer's, cancer, or other big health issues. <span class='nobr'>But in the<\/span> less\ngrand scheme of things, 2010 was <span class='nobr'>a horrible<\/span> year for my health, with multiple bouts of\nfairly extreme arm pain, and other <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-09-18\/1620\">stress-related ailments<\/a>\nalong with the random &#8220;getting old&#8221; issues that seem to beset me, like <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-11-27\/646\">bouts of back pain<\/a> and\nsuch.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, how was this last week an appropriate ending? Let's look at the day-by-day playback...<\/p>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\ntable#t1686 td { padding-bottom: 10px}\n<\/style>\n<table id='t1686' style='margin-left:2em' cellspacing='5'>\n<tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec&nbsp;25th&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td>\n\nChristmas Day. <span class='nobr'>Had a wonderful<\/span> day. <span class='nobr'>In the evening<\/span>, got slammed by <span class='nobr'>a sudden<\/span> cold.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 26th<\/td><td>\n\nDon't remember the day. <span class='nobr'>Had fever<\/span> and slept, apparently.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 27th<\/td><td>\n\nMore fever and more sleeping, but had enough energy to be beset\nby <span class='nobr'>a sudden<\/span> attack of crippling back spasms.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 28th<\/td><td>\n\nGetting more energy as the cold starts to subside. Back very painful.\nSpent the day being <span class='nobr'>a zombie<\/span> in front of the boob tube.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 29th<\/td><td>\n\nRecovered enough from the cold to decide to go ahead with <span class='nobr'>a short<\/span> trip we'd been planning,\nwhich involved <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> hours of driving and <span class='nobr'>a two<\/span>-hour boat ride. Arrive in the evening feeling\nmostly better (both the cold and my back) and hit the sack exhausted.... that good kind of exhausted.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 30th<\/td><td>\n\nGet only one hour of sleep despite crushing tiredness. <span class='nobr'>My cold seems<\/span> to have been replaced\nby insomnia. Fade in and out from being <span class='nobr'>a zombie<\/span> all day, and in the evening take NyQuil\nto try to put myself to sleep.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr valign='baseline'><td>Dec 31th<\/td><td>\n\nGot five hours of sleep, which is not enough but <span class='nobr'>a heck<\/span> of <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> better. Feel mostly okay all day.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n<p>I really hope 2011 is a better year, healthwise.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the last week was also an appropriate ending for the year on the non-health front as well.\nChristmas (prior to the cold) was wonderful, the trip was fun and included things like looking at the\nstars from the middle of nowhere on <span class='nobr'>a frozen<\/span> mountaintop with Fumie and Anthony, and we returned\nto Kyoto this evening to find more snow than the city has seen since at least WWII. <span class='nobr'>We dumped<\/span> the luggage\nin the house and Anthony and <span class='nobr'>I went<\/span> out for play in the snow, including <span class='nobr'>a snow<\/span> fort, snowball fight, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p>The snow's still falling, so I'd like to head out early in the morning\nto see the Heian Shrine with <span class='nobr'>a pristine<\/span> snowfall (such as <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-02-18\/743\">this<\/a>, <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-02-27\/750\">this<\/a>, and <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-09\/176\">this<\/a> from prior years'\nsnowfalls). However, tomorrow being January First, the shrine will be open\nall through the night and nonstop for the next few days for <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hatsumode\"><i>hatsumode<\/i><\/a> (&#8220;first\nshrine visit of the year&#8221;), so it will be crowded and anything but\npristine, so I'll sleep in.
