It Boggles The Mind To Wonder What Laws Allow This To Happen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1681'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Collectively, Americans have a reputation for being <span class='nobr'>a touch<\/span> litigious\n(such as someone suing McDonald's because their hot coffee was hot, for\nexample), but this article about <span class='nobr'>a suit<\/span> in Japan perhaps takes the\ncake:<\/p>\n\n<center><a href=\"http:\/\/mdn.mainichi.jp\/mdnnews\/news\/20101216p2a00m0na011000c.html\">Woman sues Google for displaying image of her hanging underwear in search results<\/a><\/center>\n\n<p>Someone took a photo from a public place that included within its scene\nthe publicly-visible view of her apartment building, including the\npublicly-visible view of the laundry she chose to hang outside on her\nbalcony in full view of anyone walking by. This photo was then put up by\nsomeone on some web page somewhere, and over the course of time Google's\nsearchbots found it and included it in Google's search results.<\/p>\n\n<p>And so, for crying out loud, this 20-something lady is suing Google for\n$7,000 &#8220;in consolation money and other payment&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>In one Japanese-language news-discussion board <span class='nobr'>I came<\/span> across, the first\ncomment (of 450+ that where there when <span class='nobr'>I found<\/span> it) was simply the phrase\n&#8220;persecution complex&#8221;\n\n   (<a href=\"http:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E8%A2%AB%E5%AE%B3%E5%A6%84%E6%83%B3\"><span class='nobr'>\u88ab\u5bb3\u5984\u60f3<\/span><\/a>), which is putting it mildly.\n\nYet, as ridiculous as it is, her complaint made it as far as court,\nsomething that would not happen even in sue-happy America. <span class='nobr'>I'd be very<\/span>\ninterested to know what laws have allowed it to get that far here. <span class='nobr'>Do I need<\/span> to worry about what's in the background of photos <span class='nobr'>I post<\/span> on my\nblog?<\/p>\n\n<p>I guess common sense is not enough... you really should know the local\nlaws, especially if they are pathetically stupid like the German laws that\nmake it <i><a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defamation#Germany\">illegal<\/a><\/i> to\ncall someone <span class='nobr'>a nasty<\/span> name or even merely giving an unfriendly glance. <span class='nobr'>I kid you<\/span> not.
