Last week, Kyoto friend Britto posted\non his blog<\/a> about a couple<\/span> of recent bicycle trips he'd recently taken,\nincluding one to a shrine<\/span> in the mountains north of Kyoto that sounded so\nappealing that I went<\/span> there myself the next day (though I went<\/span> by\nmotor<\/i>bike). Paul\nBarr<\/a> is still in town, so I invited<\/span> him along; that's him in the photos\nabove.<\/p>\n\n

It was a long and steep enough trip on the scooter... mad props to Britto for doing it on a bicycle!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the shrine's name (\u5ca9\u6238\u843d\u8449\u795e\u793e; iwato ochiba jinja<\/i>),\niwato<\/b> means “rock above a cave<\/span> entrance”, ochiba<\/b> means\n“fallen leaves”, and jinja<\/b> means “Shinto shrine”. I didn't<\/span> investigate the large rock face behind the shrine,\nbut the “fallen leaves” part got my attention.<\/p>\n\n

The last few weeks in Kyoto have been filled with spectacular fall\nfoliage, both by day<\/a>\nand by night<\/a>, but\nafter a while,<\/span> spectacular or not, one starts looking for something a bit<\/span>\ndifferent. The carpet of\nleaves at the Koutou-in Temple<\/a> post represented a bit<\/span> of the search for\nsomething different, but since most places clean the fallen leaves as\nquickly as they fall (why!?), it's hard to find a good<\/span> carpet-of-leaves\narea, so when I saw<\/span> the wonderful carpet in Britto's post, I knew I<\/span> had to\nvisit.<\/p>\n\n\n

The clouds and the mountains took the sun almost as soon as we got there, but we had five minutes with some intermittent sun. Most of these shots are from after the direct sun was gone,\nbut the two above, and a few<\/span> below, were lit with the last rays we got...<\/p>\n\n

The carpet is fed from a bunch of huge ginkgo<\/a> trees that tower above the area, now almost completely bare...<\/p>\n\n

I don't generally care for ginkgo trees or their leaves, perhaps because I associate<\/span> them with\nKyoto's annual atrocious arboreal neutering<\/a> that leaves large areas of the city looking horrid. But maybe<\/span> there's hope because there didn't seem to be any neutering done this year, and the streets lined with ginkgo were beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n
