I visited the gardens at the Shouzan\nResort<\/a> in north-west Kyoto the other day, and was blown away by the\nbeauty of the fall colors. Unlike all the other places I've blogged about\nrecently, it's not a temple<\/span> or shrine... just a very<\/span> well done private\ngarden at a large<\/span> restaurant\/wedding\/getaway complex (they use the word\n“resort”, but that feels too extravagant a word<\/span> for the non-garden parts, and\nnot extravagant enough for the garden at this time of year).<\/p>\n\n

As has been the case for the last few weeks, I don't<\/span> have the energy for\na proper<\/span> writeup yet, but these photos of a photo<\/span> shoot we came across may\ngive you a sense<\/span> of the place.<\/p>\n\n

The shoot was for the catalog of a local<\/span> kimono company, and the parts I\nsaw<\/span> involved two models doing shoots at several locations around the\ngardens.<\/p>\n\n

I chatted with\nthe photographer a bit<\/span> during a down<\/span> moment, and having noticed that he\nwasn't using a polarizing\nfilter<\/a>, suggested that in this particular setting it would make a huge<\/span>\ndifference for the better. (When shooting foliage, the effects of a\npolarizing<\/span> filter can be downright jaw-dropping amazing<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

Surprisingly, he had no idea what I was<\/span> talking about, even when I had<\/span>\nhim look through my camera, it appears that he didn't even know of the\nconcept until I spelled<\/span> it out and he could finally see the effect for\nhimself. He had to<\/span> agree that it was pretty amazing, but nevertheless\ndeclined my offer to loan him one. (Probably a smart<\/span> idea not to try a new<\/span>\nhorse midstream, so to speak.)<\/p>\n\n

The weather was dynamic, with bright sunshine punctuated with periods of\nheavy cloud. Either situation could make for wonderful shots, especially\nsince they had reflectors and shades and such to wrangle the light, but I\nfound<\/span> the rapid changes a bit<\/span> disconcerting. It made the<\/span> white balance\nchange with each passing minute; my WhiBal<\/a> got a\nworkout.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I actually don't care for this kind of ultra-dolled-up kimono, seen with\nbrides and maiko\/gekio\/geisha. Just doesn't do a thing<\/span> for me, though I do<\/span>\nvery much like seeing a “normal”, more refined day-to-day kimono, such as\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>,\nthis<\/a>, and probably a hundred<\/span> others I've posted but can't recall at the moment. And of course<\/span>, it's hard to resist the cuteness of kids in kimono (here<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

But for me, it's hard to resist the hubbub of a photo<\/span> shoot, so when our\npaths crossed in the gardens, I'd watch<\/span> and take some shots myself. (I\ndidn't<\/span> need their permission, but asked for it as a courtesy,<\/span> and received\nit with a smile.<\/span>)<\/p>\n\n

At this point they went one way, and I went<\/span> the other, but eventually we\ncrossed paths again at the far end of the gardens, and they had a new<\/span> model\nand were just wrapping up at that particular location...<\/p>\n\n

(Is it just me, or do others find those poodle-tail evergreen trees in the background to be really unattractive?)<\/p>\n\n
