An old friend from my days toiling in the bit mines at Yahoo! Finance in\nCalifornia was passing through Kyoto on a tour<\/span> of Japan, and we met up last\nnight for a few<\/span> hours.<\/p>\n\n

We took a walk over to the Eikando temple to see their evening lightup. I was astounded<\/span> to find that it wasn't jammed packed... I guess<\/span> it's still\nearly in the season. I've written about it before (here<\/a>) from having visited\njust the outside — you can enjoy quite a bit<\/span> of the lightup from near\nthe entrance without having to pay — but last night I actually<\/span> went\nin for the first time.<\/p>\n\n

That's the same grass in the lead shot of last year's\n“Holy Cow, the Gardens at Kyoto's Eikando Temple are Gorgeous!<\/a>”<\/p>\n\n

Also, it's the same kind of grass seen in last week's “Temple Hopping in the Mountains of South-Western Kyoto<\/a>”. I really<\/span> like it.<\/p>\n\n

I was at f<\/span>\/1.4 for all the photos above, which\nwas still very much pushing the limits in the general darkness of the\ngardens and without a tripod,<\/span> but I went<\/span> ahead and tried a shot<\/span> with the Voigtl\u00e4nder<\/a> which\nopens up only to f<\/span>\/2.5. You can't expect much with a\nfree<\/span>-standing 1\/20th of a second<\/span> at 125mm, but the biggest problem with the\nresult is that while I was<\/span> switching lenses, some ducks decided to swim\nacross the lake, turning the glass-smooth surface into a bunch<\/span> of\nripples...<\/p>\n\n

As nice as the Eikando gardens are during the night lightup, I've got to say that I prefer<\/span> them during\nthe day, even if the day is overcast and the gardens are crowded with people,\nas evidenced\nhere<\/a> and\nhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Behind him to camera right up in the mountain is a lit<\/span>-up pagoda (seen here<\/a>) that he\nwanted in the photo, but it's too out of focus to really tell what it is.<\/p>\n\n

Sergey is pretty much a quintessential “American Dream” story. Ten years<\/span> ago he was living in Ukraine with his wife and a couple<\/span> of toddlers. He replied<\/span> to a job<\/span>-wanted posting I'd placed on behalf of Yahoo!, and so I\ninterviewed<\/span> him from California over ICQ<\/a> (the one and only time I've\never used it).<\/p>\n\n

It was difficult to find good engineers at the time, and Sergey\ndistinguished himself by clearly having a clue.<\/span> We hired<\/span> him, brought him\nand his family over to America, and he became an important part of the\nYahoo! Finance family where he remains today. He's since<\/span> become and\nAmerican citizen (and with great efforts of his wife Tanya, his kids are\nfully bilingual in English and Russian) and for some reason a few<\/span> years ago\nhe picked up an interest in Japan and began studying Japanese at home. This is\nhis first visit to Japan, but he can speak Japanese quite adequately, and it\nseems that he can read much better than I. Wow.<\/p>\n\n

Today his plan was to meet his Japanese teacher for the first time (he'd\nbeen taking lessons over Skype for a while<\/span>), and tomorrow his tour moves on\nto Nara.<\/p>\n\n
