On the way to visit my brother-in-law and his wife last week in Suzuka\nJapan, to deliver the photo book of their\nwedding<\/a> that I wrote<\/span> about in the previous post, I took the<\/span> Shin Meishin\nExpressway<\/a> (“New Nagoya Kobe Expressway”), a nice<\/span> section of highway\nthat was opened just a couple<\/span> of years ago. Because of it, what would have\nbeen a four<\/span> hour drive became an hour and a half.<\/span> I was quite<\/span> glad for the\nnew road.<\/p>\n\n

It goes through some mountainous terrain, so has lots of long tunnels\nand bridges, the longest tunnel on this section being 4km long. About half\nway there, immediately upon exiting a mile<\/span>-long tunnel, I crossed<\/span> a short<\/span>\nbut high bridge, and for the short moment it took to cross the bridge, I caught<\/span> a glimpse<\/span> of a picturesque<\/span> valley below, and had an urge to visit\nit.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't have the time to visit that day, but because my arm pain<\/a> returned\nyesterday, I thought<\/span> I should<\/span> take it easy today, so after seeing a doctor<\/span>\nthis morning, I gave in<\/span> to my wanderlust and decided to scooter over to see\nthe valley.<\/p>\n\n

It wasn't as picturesque as I had remembered, though the situation\nwasn't helped by the weather, which was very heavily hazy, sometimes sunny,\nbut always threatening rain.<\/p>\n\n\n

The bridges make for some pretty pictures, but they absolutely destroy\nthe tranquility of the little valley. It's difficult<\/span> to see in the photo\nabove, but there's an old lady working a small<\/span> rice field immediately below\nthe 2nd-from-left support column. (Like the old lady seen in this rice-harvest post<\/a>,\nshe's wearing a towel<\/span> over her head). You can see<\/span> her better in the next\npicture...<\/p>\n\n

There's an entrance to the expressway very close to here, so the\nexpressway connects them to the world for the first time, but one can imagine\npeople living in the valley (and the dozens of similar valleys along the\nroute) were not wholly enthusiastic about the project.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the valley was less photogenic than I had<\/span> hoped, but since I had<\/span>\ntaken my scooter through the mountains to get there (I couldn't<\/span> take the\nexpressaay on a scooter,<\/span> and wouldn't have wanted to when small mountain\nroads awaited), I had ample<\/span> opportunity to immerse myself in a variety<\/span> of\nserendipitous photographic delights, so another half dozen posts have been\nadded to the long backlog of recent stuff I'd like to share...<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
