Yesterday in “Lunch Along the Kamo River<\/a>”, I wrote<\/span> that I wanted<\/span> to\nvisit the birds at the river with a longer<\/span> lens, and indeed, today I spent<\/span>\nawhile with my Sigma\n“Bigma” 50-500mm zoom<\/a>. The weather\/lighting was quite different today,\nand this time I was<\/span> on the other side of the river...<\/p>\n\n

I focused on the large egret closest to me, who held this pose for the longest time...<\/p>\n\n

I had my monopod<\/a>\nwith me, but soon wished that I had<\/span> my tripod<\/a>. The birds<\/span> didn't move, so I could<\/span> have set the camera on the tripod and relaxed with\nthe remote shutter release in hand. As it was<\/span>, I tried<\/span> the best I could<\/span> to\nbe comfortable holding the heavy lens and camera focused on the bird for\nlong periods at a stretch,<\/span> but you get the best stability from a monopod<\/span>\nwhen everything is out of balance, so it was a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Eventually the bird started wandering around a bit<\/span> aimlessly...<\/p>\n\n

... and then suddenly with purpose he stuck his neck way out as he marched quickly over to the waterfall...<\/p>\n\n

I was doing this with manual focus, and I feel<\/span> happy with my manual-focus results for the first time in a long<\/span> while.<\/p>\n\n

And then “poof”, the fish was lunch...<\/p>\n\n

This is somewhat more work for lunch than the bird in “Lunch with a Great<\/span> Blue Heron<\/a>”\nhad to do, but perhaps more satisfying.<\/p>\n\n

Then a much smaller, more delicate egret flew in to try his (her?) hand at it...<\/p>\n\n

Then the egret did a pufferfish impression...<\/p>\n\n

I didn't think I had much prospect to top that, so I decided<\/span> to call it a day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

As I was leaving, I came across<\/span> this couple having a cozy<\/span> lunch, and\nthought the inviting, relaxing (and nicely photogenic) view would make for\na nice<\/span> ending to the bird lunch story...<\/p>\n\n

It's always nice to visit the Kamo River area with a camera,<\/span> as there\nare usually lots of people\nenjoying themselves<\/a>.
