Continuing from my earlier posts about my brother-in-law's wedding<\/a>\non Saturday, after the hors d'oeuvre<\/i>\nreception<\/a>, there was the full-on banquet reception.<\/p>\n\n

Update:<\/b> the crop above was suggested by reader Parv<\/a>, and indeed it's better of\nthe FOB. I'd also wanted<\/span> to share a sense<\/span> of the room, but perhaps there's\nnot much sense gained (so to speak) by avoiding the crop, so I'll use it.\nFor reference, the original version I posted,<\/span> sans crop, follows...<\/p>\n\n

I was seated at the back end of the front-left table, so again I was<\/span>\nhappy to be at the edge out of everyone's line of sight, so I could<\/span> get up\nand move around in my area fairly freely, without bothering anyone.<\/p>\n\n

There was a welcome speech by Shogo's uncle (Shogo's dad's sister's\nhusband), who having been a large<\/span>-company CEO, was quite good at giving\nspeeches....<\/p>\n\n

The girls at the table in the background saw my big Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 f\/2.8 zoom\nlens<\/a> pointing their way, and did a peace<\/span> sign for the camera. (Pretty\nmuch all Japanese reflexively do a peace<\/span> sign at the first sight of any\ncamera pointed their way.)<\/p>\n\n

Shogo and Namiko also started to eat as well, which I thought<\/span> was\nimpressive, since couples tend to not get to eat anything at their own\nwedding. But it was<\/span> short lived, as friends started streaming up to honor\nthe couple by pouring them a drink.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

In theory each man in attendance could pour Shogo a drink,<\/span> which would\nquickly lead to one comatose groom, so I was<\/span> reminded of a story<\/span> I heard<\/span> in\ngrad school from an American guy whose wife was Japanese. At his wedding<\/span> in\nJapan, everyone had been pouring him drinks... it's a common<\/span> social\nconvention in Japan that pouring a drink<\/span> for someone shows them honor...\nand he was quickly getting drunk. He didn't speak much Japanese at the\ntime, but his new father-in-law sitting nearby, eventually realized that\nthe groom had actually been drinking all the drinks, and motioned to the\nbig potted plant next to the groom: take a ceremonial<\/span> sip of the drink,\nthen quietly ditch the rest into the plant. Aaaaaaaah, this made it much\neasier!<\/p>\n\n

I didn't notice any plants near Shogo, except for those blasted flowers\nright in front of him (in a clear<\/span> vase, no less), so I'm not sure how he\nhandled it. As far as<\/span> I know<\/span> he doesn't even drink alcohol — at all\n— but perhaps that's just another example of how I didn't<\/span> know him.<\/p>\n\n
