Picking up from yesterday's post about my brother-in-law Shogo\ngetting married<\/a>, after the “chapel wedding” and outside photo ops, we\nmoved inside for a short<\/span> hors d'oeuvre<\/i> reception before the main\nbanquet reception.<\/p>\n\n

Soon the couple was whisked away for some backstage preparations or\nother, and the guests were left to fend for themselves with an open bar and\na wide<\/span> variety of apparently-delicious hors d'oeuvres<\/i> that I didn't<\/span>\nget around to enjoying myself because I preferred<\/span> to enjoy the camera.<\/p>\n\n

However, the room made it really challenging, with direct sunlight\nstreaming in on one side, over to dark and cozy shadows at the other. If I had<\/span> the least bit of confidence with a flash<\/span> I probably<\/span> would have made it\nmuch easier on myself, but I'm very much an ambient light kind of guy, so I\nhad<\/span> to make do the best I could.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

I'm really happy with the photo above, because it's more than just blind\nluck. I purposefully<\/span> put the sunlight at his back, and dropped down to\ncreate an imposing angle, knowing (or at least hoping) that his great smile\nwould turn the “imposing angle” into something warm and inviting and fun,\nsomething that accurately reflected the mood. It's not the<\/span> best photo in\nthe world, but I think<\/span> the result is good.<\/p>\n\n\n

Only some light snacks are shown above, but the volume and variety of\nhors d'oeuvres<\/i> were such that I wondered<\/span> whether that was the main\nmeal, so had to ask. Anthony had enough beef to hold him to dinner, even though\na full<\/span> okosama plate<\/i> (“Most-Honorable-Child's Meal”) awaited him at the\nbanquet reception.<\/p>\n\n

The guy in the photo above spent quite a while<\/span> drawing a picture,<\/span> but\nfor the life of me I can't<\/span> find the photo of it that I thought<\/span> I took,<\/span> so\nthis is a big<\/span> fail on my part. \ud83d\ude41 <\/p>\n\n

And speaking of fails, the focus in this next shot is horribly off...<\/p>\n\n

I ventured into the darker reaches of the room, and even at f\/1.4 and ISO 6,400, I was still<\/span> pushing my luck.\nI've written many times about the Nikon D700's low-light prowess\n(such as in “Impossible Photography: No Light, No Tripod, No Hope. D700 and a 50mm<\/span> f\/1.2<\/a>”), but you still need enough light to focus well, and enough skill to put it all together, and I was<\/span> missing both.<\/p>\n\n

I was borrowing the new Nikkor 85mm f\/1.4 from St\u00e9phane Barbery<\/a>, along\nwith his camera (so that I had<\/span> two Nikon D700 bodies, and could have two\nlenses at the ready at all times), so maybe I would<\/span> have had better focus\nluck by using its autofocus. But I prefer<\/span> to focus manually, and sometimes\npay the price for my arrogance.<\/p>\n\n\n
