Fumie's brother (my brother-in-law), Shogo, got married yesterday, to Namiko Shimoya, in Nagoya Japan.<\/p>\n\n

I was there as a guest, but of course I had<\/span> my camera, so took a few<\/span>\nsnapshots (about 1,200). I hold out<\/span> hope that at least a few<\/span> came out.<\/p>\n\n

The day's events started with a short<\/span> ceremony in a Western<\/span>-esque\nchapel, then a short<\/span> hors d'oeuvre<\/i> reception, then the full-on\nwedding reception party. I've only glanced at the photos from the first\npart so far, so that's what I'll present in today's post.<\/p>\n\n

I've written before about Japanese chapel weddings here<\/a>, though this time\nthere was no “minister” as featured in that post. Also unlike that post,\nwhich features photos taken during a fake<\/span> wedding to demonstrate a hotel's<\/span>\nchapel for prospective couples, this was a real<\/span> wedding and I couldn't<\/span> move\naround, so all photos inside the chapel were from my seat (which, being\nhusband to the groom's sister, was in the photographically advantageous\nfront row, and thankfully at the end of the row, so I knew<\/span> that I wouldn't<\/span>\nbe blocking anyone else's sight lines).<\/p>\n\n

I've known Shogo for 13 years, since he was a senior<\/span> in high school, and\nI realized<\/span> at the wedding that I've never really known him. He's always<\/span> been the quiet type... friendly and affable, yes, but quiet, a man<\/span> of few\nwords. So I was<\/span> completely surprised at the outgoing, totally at-ease man\nwe experienced, on top of the world and just thrilling to a fun<\/span> day. It was wonderful<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

There were various ceremonies, such as having the best man and\nbridesmaid sign the wedding registry as official witnesses, and\neventually....<\/p>\n\n

The wedding venue had an interesting design... the couple exited the\nchapel via the doors at the back, into what appeared to be some other\nroom, and the doors closed behind them. Then almost immediately, the doors\nopened again and the chapel was flooded with brilliant sunlight. It turns<\/span> out that there were two sets of doors separated by a thin<\/span> hallway; the\noutside pair remained closed when the couple exited the chapel, then when the\ninside pair was closed, the outside pair was opened to the sunlight, and\nthen the inside pair was opened to let the sunlight flood in. It was quite<\/span>\na dramatic<\/span> effect.<\/p>\n\n

In the brief moment when both pairs of doors were closed, the couple\nstepped out of sight in the in-between hallway, and waited there as all the\nguests exited the chapel and lined the set of steps just outside. Then the\ncouple made a grand<\/span> exit from the chapel at the top of the steps, and descended the\nstairs amid a shower<\/span> of flower petals that the guests had been provided....<\/p>\n\n

At the very top of the steps were the couple's parents, followed by\nclose relatives and then more-distant relatives, and then friends spilling\noff the bottom of the steps. I should<\/span> have been next to Fumie (in the\npurple kimono above), but this one time I stepped<\/span> out of my\nplace as a guest<\/span> to get a better<\/span> photo.... the venue offered an excellent\nlocation to get photos from a great<\/span> vantage, but none of the official\nphotographers were there, so I felt<\/span> it was worth while to take the\nopportunity to try for some unique shots for them.<\/p>\n\n

The arrangement on the steps was designed to give the parents and close\nrelatives the best position, but in looking at the photos, I realize<\/span> it's\nreally a great<\/span> metaphor for life. The couple<\/span> start out first with family\n(that they didn't pick, but were born in to), and progress toward the\nfriends that they have chosen for themselves.<\/p>\n\n

Everyone was then repositioned on the stairs for a formal<\/span> portrait, this time\nwith the couple and close family up front at the bottom of the stairs, and\nfriends in back at the top. (For this I put<\/span> my cameras away, of course.)<\/p>\n\n

After the formal photo I recollected my camera as the couple headed in,\nand I got<\/span> this shot that really stands out in my mind...<\/p>\n\n

I would have never imagined the Shogo I thought<\/span> I knew<\/span> doing this, but\nthe new Shogo (or the old Shogo newly revealed to me) was on top of the\nworld and thoroughly enjoying the day, and had no problem letting everyone feel and share in his joy.<\/p>\n\n
