Yesterday we went for a short drive in the northern mountains of Kyoto\nto visit the Jakkoin Temple (\u5bc2\u5149\u9662)<\/span><\/a>.\nFirst we had lunch at a nearby<\/span> restaurant, and Anthony made the picture of\na little<\/span> Japanese kid drawing in his notebook while we were waiting for our order...<\/p>\n\n

Across the street from the restaurant was what I thought<\/span> was the\nphotogenic entrance to the temple, but it turns out the temple entrance\nwas one door down...<\/p>\n\n

I didn't realize it at the time, but the iron lantern was given to the\ntemple by a man<\/span> who died in 1598. The same man<\/span> also gave Japan its first\nCatholic martyrs<\/a>, and ordered the death of the great great great great\ngreat great great great great great great great great great\ngrandfather of one of Anthony's friends. Knowing this now I don't<\/span> think I'll\nwant to go again, but if we do, I'll not mention that little tidbit to Anthony.<\/p>\n\n

I love these traditional roofs, made of thick stacks of thin bark\nshingles (such as this<\/a>\nand this<\/a>), but\nthis one is not as old as most. The temple<\/span> was completely destroyed by\narson in 2000, which is why it was closed for renovation when we first\ntried to come here about five years ago.<\/p>\n\n

The temple's name \u5bc2\u5149\u9662 at first glance might look to mean “temple of\nthe forlorn light”, which considering its recent history and past patronage\nmay be appropriate, but the intended meaning probably relies on a less<\/span>\ncommon use for the first character, along the lines of “temple of the\ntimelessly elegant light”.<\/p>\n\n

I took a full-on shot of the shingles, thinking I might<\/span> make desktop\nbackground<\/a> out of a slightly<\/span> cropped version. It looks<\/span> like nothing in\nthis small version, but when you click through to the big version,\nit looks like sharply-rendered, high-detail nothing....<\/p>\n\n

With my recent\nvexations<\/a> I found<\/span> my desire to get out with the camera had disappeared,\nso it was wonderful to be back in the saddle, out enjoying the camera again.<\/p>\n\n

The temple area was pretty but small, which explains why it was almost\ndeserted. The nearby Sanzenin Temple<\/a> is much\nmore popular, and now having visited both, it was easy to see why. (One of\nmy favorite all-time photos was taken at the Sanzenin Temple, by the way,\n“Serenity\nat the Sanzen-in Temple<\/a>”.)<\/p>\n\n

Having been left underwhelmed by the temple, we checked out the\naforementioned photogenic path next to it...<\/p>\n\n
