I joined my mom on the veranda for coffee this cool, sunny,\nexceedingly-pleasant morning, but knowing we would be accosted by all manner of\nbirds<\/a> looking for their own breakfast, I of course<\/span> had to bring the\ncamera along.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned in “A Few<\/span> Japanese Swords of Note<\/a>”, the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm f\/2.5<\/a>\nis challenging for me to work with in a close<\/span>-up setting that's dynamic,\nbecause the focus pull is so long and the depth of field can be so very\nthin. The chickadees<\/span> tend to come in an out pretty quickly, but sometimes\njust stand around for a few<\/span> seconds, giving me a chance<\/span> to get lucky with\nthe focus. (One sat on my hand the other day for 20 seconds waiting for a\nworm,<\/span> apparently not noticing the one sitting right at its feet. Sadly, I\ncouldn't<\/span> take a picture<\/span> because, well, I was holding<\/span> a chickadee.<\/span>)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I got an<\/span> okay focus in the shot above, but he didn't have his\nhead turned enough to get a good<\/span> glint in his eye, so the result is pretty\nflat, but the white feathers under his eye are clear...<\/p>\n\n

This is at default sharpening in Lightroom, but something about these\nfeathers look way oversharpened to me, but they retain that odd quality even\nwhen I turned<\/span> sharpening off completely, so perhaps that's just the way\nthey are.<\/p>\n\n

I may as well take the moment to compare the shot above with a similar<\/span>\none I took<\/span> yesterday (while my dad was clearing a fallen<\/span> tree<\/a>)\nwith the Sigma Bigma\n50<\/span>-500mm zoom<\/a> I was<\/span> using at the time....<\/p>\n\n

As illustrated the other\nday<\/a>, some of the chickadees can be pretty unreserved about asking for a\nworm<\/span> any time any place, so while Anthony and I were<\/span> standing there by a tree,<\/span> one\ncame to a branch<\/span> three feet from my face and waited. Unfortunately it moved to a higher<\/span>\nbranch when I swung<\/span> the camera around, so I didn't<\/span> get nearly the closeup I was<\/span> hoping for,\nbut the Sigma's autofocus, OS, and sharpness strut their stuff in this quick snapshot.\nHere's a full<\/span>-resolution crop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morning glories next to the veranda are a continual<\/span> draw for me, but\nI'm surprised to see I've not posted them before, except one wide-angle shot\nlast year<\/a>. Flowers are, of course, the most quintessentially overdone\ncliché photographic subject, but pretty is pretty, so I don't<\/span> mind\nacting as if I'm the first person to ever point a camera<\/span> their way...<\/p>\n\n
