Never a dull moment around here. Yesterday was nonstop hubbub with Cousin Titi's visit<\/a>\nand her daddy's\nbirthday<\/a>. They left for home this morning, so perhaps to fill in the\nquiet, a 70<\/span>' (21 meter) tree decided to fall for no apparent reason. It's a sumac<\/span>, which Wikipedia says<\/a> reaches a maximum<\/span> height\nof less than half that, so perhaps that's why it fell.<\/p>\n\n\n

It just seemed to have been the tree's time. There was no storm, no\nwind... nothing special. Just a loud<\/span> crack and, well, the sound of a tree<\/span>\nfalling, taking out a couple<\/span> of other smaller trees with it along the\nway.<\/p>\n\n

It fell right over the sandbox (seen here<\/a>), taking\nout the redbud<\/a> that had\nbeen shading the sandbox. Luckily no one was playing at the time.<\/p>\n\n

Living around here, my folks are well versed in cleaning up after these\nthings. I blogged<\/span> about clearing a fallen<\/span> tree<\/a> a\nfew<\/span> years ago, and I'm sure I will<\/span> again later this week.<\/p>\n\n

The remnants of the 25\"-diameter trunk were quite dynamic, with thick\nlayers of multicolored wood....<\/p>\n\n\n

Some large areas in the trunk had a whitish<\/span> fungus or something, so\nthat's probably why it fell, but no idea why it chose a calm,<\/span> sunny day to do it.<\/p>\n\n
