As I wrote in yesterday's post about the doggy funeral<\/a>, we had\nlunch at a great<\/span> cafe. In the southern<\/span> part of Shiga Prefecture, perhaps an\nhour's drive from Kyoto, is a private<\/span> business called Sunainosato<\/i>\n(\u5bff\u9577\u751f<\/span>\u306e\u90f7<\/a>), which consists of a\nrestaurant,<\/span> a cafe,<\/span> and a confectionery,<\/span> all on 50 acres of wonderfully\nwooded land in the countryside.<\/p>\n\n

The grounds are open as if it were a public<\/span> park, and they're very nice.<\/p>\n\n

The little drop-off shelter near the parking lot illustrates the simple,\nunderstated class of the entire site.<\/p>\n\n

The first building you come to is a welcome<\/span> house, with a mini<\/span> cafe and\na gift<\/span> shop selling some of the confections they make on site. The mini cafe<\/span> really isn't a cafe,<\/span> though, since they don't charge you for the sweets\nand tea they offer anyone who wanders in.<\/p>\n\n

We wandered in.<\/p>\n\n

There's just something about a tastefully done decoration on a cafe<\/span>\ntable that sets it so far apart from a flower<\/span> dropped in a vase.<\/span> This\nsimple item, though looking fairly plastic in this unflattering photo,\nreminded me of my “Japanese Attention to\nPresentation<\/i><\/a>” post a year<\/span> ago.<\/p>\n\n

The snacks and tea they brought were very nice, and I was<\/span> shocked when I\nfound<\/span> out that we didn't have to pay. For Anthony's part, he was in a good<\/span>\nmood with some sweets in his tummy...<\/p>\n\n

We then moved on toward the small cafe that was our lunch destination,\nand along the way I took<\/span> one of the most surreal photos I have<\/span> ever\ntaken...<\/p>\n\n

Other than a white-balance correction, this is straight out of Lightroom\nwith its default settings, but (particularly in the large version<\/a>) it looks as\nif I Photoshopped<\/span> them onto the empty scene. The nondescript<\/span> gravel path\ncombined with an almost complete lack of shadow and the sliver-thin depth\nof field at f<\/span>\/1.8 make for something that looks\ncompletely fake, destined to appear on Photoshop Disasters<\/a>.\nExcept it's totally real. Weird.<\/p>\n\n

With some sugar in him, Anthony was in a dinosaur<\/span>-play running mood (as\ndescribed here<\/a>\nand here<\/a>), and\nI used<\/span> it as an opportunity to practice manual focus on a fast<\/span>-moving\ntarget.<\/p>\n\n

There's a big formal restaurant somewhere on site that's apparently very\nfamous and very expensive, but the cafe was perfectly reasonable (maybe $12\nfor lunch), and the food was very good.<\/p>\n\n
