The hotel that I\nrecently<\/span> wrote about<\/a> (at which we stayed during our recent mini trip to\nAwaji Island a couple<\/span> of hours south of Kyoto), Westin Awaji Island<\/a>, is\npart of a conference<\/span> center and park called the “Awaji Yumebutai”\n (\u6de1\u8def\u5922\u821e\u53f0;<\/span>, “Stage of Dreams”,\n\nEnglish\nhome page<\/a>), a complex<\/span> array of buildings and visuallly-interesting\nareas built on the side of a mountain<\/span> that had been half taken away in the\nearly 90s for use as sea-fill during construction of the man-made islands\nthat are now Kansai\nInternational Airport<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

One of the “visually-interesting areas” is known as the “100-level\ngarden”\n\n (\u767e\u6bb5\u82d1;<\/span>\n\nhyakudan'en<\/i>), which consists of 100 squares of terraced gardens.<\/p>\n\n

On the hotel post the other day, I showed<\/span> the view looking left\nfrom our room balcony<\/a>, and if it were possible to look further left\nstill, through the hotel, this is the view I would<\/span> have been able to show:<\/p>\n\n

We weren't able to explore the area around the hotel except for our last\nmorning just before checking out, so having time for just one of the many\ninteresting areas, we picked the squares to pay a quick<\/span> visit.<\/p>\n\n

Most of the squares' flowers were decorated by school kids with\npinwheels or the like. This bed of little yellow flowers (the same flower\nbed that lead on my Pretty Flowers to Brighten the Day<\/a> post) had wishes by the\nkids, The one above<\/span>, by a third<\/span>-grade boy named Naoki, says “Preserve\nnature; don't litter in the mountains<\/i>”.<\/p>\n\n

And speaking of wishes, I wish I<\/span> would have had time to explore the\nvisual opportunities the site offered. Most of these shots are just\npedestrian establishing shots that merely document that we visited. We were there<\/span> for just 13 minutes. Pausing a moment<\/span> as I was<\/span> racing down the stairs\nto catch up with the family, I made one<\/span> quick effort at a “geometric art”\nshot of some stairs running up to the side...<\/p>\n\n

I'm not really happy with it, but a minute<\/span> later, my last shot at the terraces turns out to be my\nfavorite shot at the terraces...<\/p>\n\n
