Modern digital cameras encode <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of such data &mdash; shutter\nspeed, lens focal length, etc. &mdash; into the image file, generally called\n&#8220;Exif Data&#8221; (&#8220;Exif&#8221; stands for &#8220;Exchangeable\nImage File Format&#8221; and as an acronym would normally be written as &#8220;EXIF&#8221;, but the standard creators\nexplicitly say that it should be written &#8220;Exif&#8221;, which is nice.).\n\n<\/p>\n\n<div style='border:3px red dotted; margin:2em; padding: 1em 2em'>\n<p>As of Dec 2016 this tool has moved to <a href='http:\/\/exif.regex.info\/exif.cgi'>http:\/\/exif.regex.info<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n\n<p>\n\nSo, <span class='nobr'>I wrote<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a little<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/exif.regex.info\/exif.cgi\">online Exif\nviewer<\/a> to view whatever data might be encoded. Many times\nthere's just about nothing, as the data is stripped somewhere along the\nway. Here's <span class='nobr'>a version<\/span> of the previous picture with most <a\nhref=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2F_JEF1348_sm.jpg\">data\nmissing<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>It's missing<\/span> because it's <span class='nobr'>a smaller<\/span> version that's meant for\nweb display, and for such use the data just makes the file bigger and\nslower to download.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nGeoencoded photos get links in the summary area to Google Maps and the\nlike, and below that is an embedded Google Maps pane. Once you've done that, later, when\nyou're viewing <span class='nobr'>a page<\/span> with an image you want to check out, just click the\nbutton and you'll be whisked to <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> tab showing the image's data. <span class='nobr'>I find this<\/span> really useful. It doesn't work in IE, though, sorry.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI use the viewer a lot on images <span class='nobr'>I see<\/span> in the Digital Photography Review <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/forums.dpreview.com\/forums\/forum.asp?forum=1005\">Samples and\nGalleries<\/a> forum. Lots of nice pictures in there. Many have their Exif\ndata stripped, but many do not.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nFinally, <span class='nobr'>I should<\/span> note that my viewer makes use of Phil Harvey's most\nexcellent <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.sno.phy.queensu.ca\/~phil\/exiftool\/\">Image::ExifTool<\/a>\nlibrary.
