Today is Children's Day\n(\u5b50\u4f9b\u306e\u65e5)<\/span><\/a>, a national<\/span> holiday in Japan that\nwraps up a series<\/span> of holidays collectively called Golden\nWeek<\/a>. Fumie's folks got a special<\/span> cake that we could all enjoy...<\/p>\n\n\n

I think Anthony was with them when they picked up the cake, and they\nasked him what wish he wanted written.<\/p>\n\n\n

I completely missed it at the time, but looking at these pictures now, I realize<\/span> that the overall shape of the cake is that of a traditional<\/span> kabuto<\/a><\/i> samurai helmet. It's a symbol<\/span> for boys that they grow up strong and healthy, and a small<\/span>\nversion is often displayed in the homes of families with boys during this\ntime of year (and indeed, we have one in our living room now).<\/p>\n\n

The same symbol was on the back of Anthony's shichi-go-san<\/i> hakama\n(men's traditional formal wear), as seen in the lead photo of this post<\/a>. These symbolic\nhelmets, along with koinobori<\/i> flying\ncarp<\/a>, are common symbols to see in the weeks surrounding Children's Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
