image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_031705.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>\n1,000mm\n&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;\n1\/10<sup>th<\/sup> second\n&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;\nHandheld\/Unbraced\n<\/span>\n<br\/>Yes, the <a href=\"\/blog\/2010-04-14\/1492\"><span class='nobr'>Sigma 50<\/span>-500mm &#8220;Bigma&#8221;<\/a> optical stabilization is <i>that<\/i> good\n<\/div>\n\n<p>During the return home after <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-04-25\/1502\">yesterday's Daimonji\nhike<\/a>, Anthony and <span class='nobr'>I stopped<\/span> for <span class='nobr'>a cake<\/span> at <span class='nobr'>a cafe<\/span> we found along the way,\n<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/r.tabelog.com\/kyoto\/A2603\/A260301\/26001099\/\">Cafe Gremer<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>The cake was<\/span> great, and the home-made lemonade (with lemons from the\nbackyard!) was superb, but the interior of the shop was very dark and\ngloomy, right out of <span class='nobr'>a fairytale<\/span> nightmare, immediately bringing to mind\nthe worry that we might <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hansel_and_gretel\">be devoured by <span class='nobr'>a\nhermit<\/span> witch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>But a tiny frosted window immediately behind our seats was getting hit\nby direct sunlight, splashing <span class='nobr'>a luxuriously<\/span> delicious glow onto the\ntasteful flower arrangement on the table, so <span class='nobr'>I pulled<\/span> out the camera to\nplay as we waited for our order. <span class='nobr'>It had the<\/span> <a href=\"\/blog\/2010-04-17\/1494\"><span class='nobr'>Sigma 50<\/span>-500mm superzoom<\/a> attached, and also had the 2&times; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_031701.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Bigma With the 2&times;TC<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>While playing in this wonderful small splash of light with <span class='nobr'>a lens<\/span> that\ncould go to 1,000mm, <span class='nobr'>I wondered<\/span> what it might do in the darker reaches of\nthe restaurant, so on <span class='nobr'>a whim,<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I went to<\/span> full zoom and snapped <span class='nobr'>a picture<\/span> of\none of the thousand nick-knacks filling every conceivable surface of the\ninterior, in this case <span class='nobr'>a Pinocchio<\/span> hanging above the counter where the\nproprietress worked and chatted amiably with the regulars that filled the\nseats.<\/p>\n\n<p>I was just sitting there free-holding the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-04-17\/1494\">huge lens<\/a> + camera + TC\ncombo, not even bracing my elbows on the table. <span class='nobr'>I knew it<\/span> was <span class='nobr'>a throw<\/span>-away\ntest shot with no hope, but playing around is how <span class='nobr'>I learn,<\/span> and in this case\n<span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> floored to find the result was reasonably sharp. <span class='nobr'>The large<\/span> version of\nthe Pinocchio shot above was exported from Lightroom with all default\nsettings... no extra post-processing at all.<\/p>\n\n<p>I wouldn't expect that I have the skill to get this kind of result when it counts,\nbut it's comforting to know that the Sigma OS will allow it if my skill does.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Nikon D700's low-light abilities are amazing (see\n&#8220;<a class='pt' href=\"\/blog\/2008-09-15\/935\">Impossible Photography: No Light, No Tripod, No Hope.
