During the return home after yesterday's Daimonji\nhike<\/a>, Anthony and I stopped<\/span> for a cake<\/span> at a cafe<\/span> we found along the way,\nCafe Gremer<\/a>. The cake was<\/span> great, and the home-made lemonade (with lemons from the\nbackyard!) was superb, but the interior of the shop was very dark and\ngloomy, right out of a fairytale<\/span> nightmare, immediately bringing to mind\nthe worry that we might be devoured by a\nhermit<\/span> witch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

But a tiny frosted window immediately behind our seats was getting hit\nby direct sunlight, splashing a luxuriously<\/span> delicious glow onto the\ntasteful flower arrangement on the table, so I pulled<\/span> out the camera to\nplay as we waited for our order. It had the<\/span> Sigma 50<\/span>-500mm superzoom<\/a> attached, and also had the 2× teleconverter that extends the zoom to 1,000mm and the magnification to 0.64×<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

While playing in this wonderful small splash of light with a lens<\/span> that\ncould go to 1,000mm, I wondered<\/span> what it might do in the darker reaches of\nthe restaurant, so on a whim,<\/span> I went to<\/span> full zoom and snapped a picture<\/span> of\none of the thousand nick-knacks filling every conceivable surface of the\ninterior, in this case a Pinocchio<\/span> hanging above the counter where the\nproprietress worked and chatted amiably with the regulars that filled the\nseats.<\/p>\n\n

I was just sitting there free-holding the huge lens<\/a> + camera + TC\ncombo, not even bracing my elbows on the table. I knew it<\/span> was a throw<\/span>-away\ntest shot with no hope, but playing around is how I learn,<\/span> and in this case\nI was<\/span> floored to find the result was reasonably sharp. The large<\/span> version of\nthe Pinocchio shot above was exported from Lightroom with all default\nsettings... no extra post-processing at all.<\/p>\n\n

I wouldn't expect that I have the skill to get this kind of result when it counts,\nbut it's comforting to know that the Sigma OS will allow it if my skill does.<\/p>\n\n

The Nikon D700's low-light abilities are amazing (see\n“Impossible Photography: No Light, No Tripod, No Hope. D700 and a 50mm<\/span> f\/1.2<\/a>”\nand\n“Pushing Lowlight-Photography Limits: The Atta Terrace Hotel at Night<\/a>” for examples), and I sometimes<\/span> have the ability to hold the camera fairly still\n(such as in\n“In the Ballpark of Hope: Okinawan Grave In the Dark<\/a>”),\nbut 1,000mm at 1\/10th of a second<\/span> is just ridiculously outside the envelope..... or should be.<\/p>\n\n\n
