I've been busy busy busy\nwith Lightroom plugin stuff<\/a>\nand so haven't gotten much time to play with my new Sigma “Bigma” 50-500mm\nsuperzoom<\/a>, but I wanted<\/span> to post a few<\/span> samples taken with the\nSigma APO Teleconverter 2x EX DG<\/a>\nattached, turning the Bigma into a 100<\/span>-1,000mm f<\/span>\/9-f<\/span>\/13 zoom.<\/p>\n\n

These aren't from a proper test... I just set<\/span> the\ncamera+teleconverter+lens's substantial mass on a table<\/span> and pointed it out\nthe open window, turned the lens' optical stabilization off, and fired off\nsome shots....<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\nNikon D700 + Sigma “Bigma” 50-500mm OS @ 1000 mm — 1<\/sup>\/<\/big>1000 sec, f<\/span>\/13, ISO 1600 —\nfull exif<\/a><\/span>\n1000mm wide open at f<\/span>\/13<\/span>\na fair bit mushy\n<\/div>\n\n
<\/a>\nNikon D700 + Sigma “Bigma” 50-500mm OS @ 1000 mm — 1<\/sup>\/<\/big>125 sec, f<\/span>\/64, ISO 4000 —\nfull exif<\/a><\/span>\n1000mm at f<\/span>\/64<\/span>\nextremely mushy, but what do you expect at f<\/span>\/64?\n<\/div>\n\n

The viewfinder was surprisingly bright for f<\/span>\/9,\nthough the out-of-focus areas had all kinds of annoying chromatic\naberration when viewed through the viewfinder.... but not, thankfully, in\nthe photos themselves.<\/p>\n\n

A Nikon D700 does not autofocus a lens<\/span> whose maximum aperture is smaller\nthan f<\/span>\/5.6, so with the teleconverter it turns into\na manual<\/span>-focus only lens.<\/p>\n\n

Still, I took the<\/span> opportunity for some guy crossing the little bridge I\ncan<\/span> see from my window (seen at 200mm in the first shot of this post<\/a>) to try an\noptical-stabilization-assisted on-the-fly shot, and all things considered,\nit came out okay...<\/p>\n\n

As a bonus, the teleconverter turns the lens into an almost true macro,\nat 0.64× magnification. I'll have to give that a try<\/span> soon.<\/p>\n\n
