What <span class='nobr'>I\nneglected<\/span> to mention is that it also came with <span class='nobr'>a big<\/span> mass of industrial\nbeauty called the &#8220;<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaphoto.com\/shop\/50-500mm-f45-63-dg-os-hsm-sigma\">Sigma\nBigma<\/a>&#8221;, the Sigma 50mm-500mm F4.5-6.3 OS HSM zoom lens. Superzooms\n     like this can be really convenient which is why <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> it in the first\n     place, but are generally at best &#8220;okay&#8221; all\n     around, but not &#8220;great&#8221; at anything. <span class='nobr'>I used to<\/span> have Nikon's <a\n     href=\"\/blog\/2006-10-05\/263\"><span class='nobr'>Nikkor 18<\/span>-200mm<\/a> 11&times;\n     superzoom, and it was <span class='nobr'>a wonderful<\/span> all-day all-around packing-light travel\n     lens. <span class='nobr'>But it was<\/span> slow (that is, didn't let in <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of light, thereby\n     requiring long, slow, blur-inducing shutter speeds), and had <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of\n     distortion.<\/p>\n\n     <p>I brought it on a camping trip <span class='nobr'>a couple<\/span> of years ago and it was\n     really convenient, but seeing its compromises manifested in <a\n     href=\"\/blog\/2008-05-22\/821\">&#8220;bendy&#8221; horizons in ocean\n     shots<\/a> is painful. <span class='nobr'>I used it<\/span> on <a\n     href=\"\/blog\/2009-11-09\/1351\"><span class='nobr'>a trip<\/span> to Disneyland<\/a> last\n     year, making it twice in three years that <span class='nobr'>I used<\/span> it. Clearly, its\n     compromises were more than <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> normally willing to deal with.<\/p>\n\n     <\/li>\n\n<li><p><b>Second, it's <span class='nobr'>a Sigma.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n     <p>Sorry if I sound snobbish, but I'm <span class='nobr'>a realist<\/span>: Sigma has not earned <span class='nobr'>a reputation<\/span> as <span class='nobr'>a\n     top<\/span>-tier lens company. <span class='nobr'>I personally<\/span> have experience with only one of their lenses (<a\n     href=\"\/blog\/2006-10-31\/274\">Sigma 30mm f\/1.4<\/a>), and it\n     matched the sense <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> of them: their stuff can be great, but their quality control can be iffy, so you have to watch out\n     to be sure to get <span class='nobr'>a good<\/span> unit.<\/p>\n\n     <p>What can be great about Sigma is their <i>value<\/i>, along the lines of\n     &#8220;90% of the quality at 30% of the price&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n     <p>I've been getting the sense that Sigma is improving in the high-end range,\n     but still didn't have much in the way of expectations for this lens.\n     My feeling, <span class='nobr'>I guess,<\/span> is that they're the top of the 2nd-tier lenses.<\/p>\n\n     <\/li>\n\n<li><p><b>I'd seem some <i>horrible<\/i> reviews of its predecessor.<\/b><\/p>\n\n     <p>Sigma has had a 50-500mm superzoom out for <span class='nobr'>a while,<\/span> and <span class='nobr'>I saw<\/span> some reviews\n     where side-by-side shots were shown from the Sigma and some other lens, and the\n     Sigma's was so bad as to be not worth even using. Really really really bad.<\/p><!-- dbl okay -->\n\n     <p>But that particular review was just some unqualified guy like me, and it was\n     for <span class='nobr'>a different,<\/span> older lens. This new version <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/news\/1002\/10022010sigma50mm500mm.asp\">was\njust announced<\/a>\n     in February, and had <span class='nobr'>a completely<\/span> new optical design, so maybe there\n     was hope.<\/p>\n\n     <\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p style='margin-top:60px'>So, why did <span class='nobr'>I give<\/span> it <span class='nobr'>a try<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n<ul><li><p><b>It's <span class='nobr'>a zoom<\/span> out to 500mm.<\/b><\/p>\n\n     <p>The longest reach I have now is my <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-11-06\/275\"><span class='nobr'>Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.8 VR<\/a>\n     (which, despite being <span class='nobr'>a Nikon,<\/span> also had <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-01-19\/363\">quality issues<\/a>). <span class='nobr'>I used to<\/span> have a\n     1.7&times; teleconverter that could turn its maximum reach to 320mm,\n     but <span class='nobr'>I seem<\/span> to have lost it )-:.<\/p>\n\n     <\/li>\n\n     <li><p><b>It's <span class='nobr'>a 10<\/span>&times; superzoom.<\/b><\/p>\n\n          <p>So convenient, and this version has &#8220;OS&#8221; (optical stabilization).<\/p>\n\n          <\/li>\n\n  <li><p><b>Did <span class='nobr'>I mention<\/span> it's 500mm?<\/b><\/p>\n\n       <p>That kind of zoom has some appeal.<\/p>\n\n       <\/li>\n\n  <li><p><b>It was my birthday<\/b><\/p>\n\n       <p>'nuff said<\/p>\n\n       <\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class='ic wide'><a name=\"030809\" href=\"\/i\/JF7_030809.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_030809_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2010 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i030809\"\ntitle=\"Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2010 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Sigma &#8220;Bigma&#8221; 50-500mm OS @ 170 mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>500 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/14, ISO 1000 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_030809.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_030809.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><b>First Impressions<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>When I first got the <span class='nobr'>Nikkor 70<\/span>-200mm way back when, <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> <i>shocked<\/i>\nat how big it was.... <i>much<\/i> larger than <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> expected, and my arms\nwere tired after trying to use it hand-held for just <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> minutes. <span class='nobr'>It was massive<\/span>. <span class='nobr'>But I soon<\/span> got used to it, and for years haven't given its size <span class='nobr'>a\nsecond<\/span> thought, except when it comes to packing. <span class='nobr'>I can use<\/span> it handheld all\nday.<\/p>\n\n<p>But that didn't even being to prepare me for the dwarf-star-producing\nmass of lens that this new Sigma Bigma is. Photos of it show <span class='nobr'>a normal<\/span>\n&#8220;big lens&#8221; shape that lacks context, so you don't realize that\nthe lens barrel is as thick as a 1,000-year-old redwood, and just as heavy.\n&#8220;Tank turret&#8221; and &#8220;Saturn V Rocket&#8221; come\nimmediately to mind. It is, literally, thicker than my arm. <span class='nobr'>For some pictures<\/span> and comparisons, see my post about <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-04-17\/1494\">just how big the Bigma\nis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>A Nikon D700 with the MD-10 vertical grip is even larger than Nikon's\nflagship D3, but it looks <i>cute and tiny<\/i> when this massive lens is\nattached. Or, <span class='nobr'>I should<\/span> say, when you attach the camera to the lens. <span class='nobr'>I dare say<\/span> that <span class='nobr'>a smaller<\/span> SLR (D40 or D60) might actually fit <i>inside<\/i> the\nlens hood. <span class='nobr'>It would<\/span> be comical.<\/p>\n\n<p>This lens could not scream &#8220;mid life crisis&#8221; and &#8220;compensating&#8221; more\nthan it already does, unless it were candy-apple red and came with <span class='nobr'>a\nfold<\/span>-down top.<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-top:60px'><b>Second Impressions<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>I had unboxed it late last night after posting about my new camera, and\nso took just <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> test shots in the dark glow of my den. This included a\n1\/80th-second shot at 500mm <i>without<\/i> the stabilization feature turned\non. <span class='nobr'>I expected<\/span> it to be horribly blurry due to camera shake, and <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> it\nonly for comparison to <span class='nobr'>a shot<\/span> with the stabilization on, but it turned out\nto be <span class='nobr'>a stunningly<\/span> usable result. <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> that the lens just had too much\nmass to shake much in my hands.<\/p>\n\n<p>The build quality seems <i>excellent<\/i>. <span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> anything this heavy\nwould feel solid, but it does feel solid... rock solid. <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> tell what\nthe outside is made of, but I'd guess some kind of matte plastic. <span class='nobr'>It's embedded<\/span> with little microscopic flecks of something that sparkle in the\nlight such that it gives the distinct impression of <span class='nobr'>a matte<\/span> metallic paint\n(and hence of metal). <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> suppose I'm describing it well, but it's\nvery, very nice. Feels good. Solid. Manly.<\/p>\n\n<p>I was also pleased to notice that it's the closest thing to <span class='nobr'>a macro<\/span> that\n<span class='nobr'>I have<\/span>: it's best magnification is 0.32&times;. <span class='nobr'>A true<\/span> &#8220;macro&#8221; should have\n<span class='nobr'>a magnification<\/span> of at least 1&times;, but many companies cheat and call\n0.5&times; magnification a &#8220;macro&#8221; (including the borrowed Zeiss 100mm <span\nclass='f'>f<\/span>\/2 featured in my &#8220;<a class='pt'\nhref=\"\/blog\/2009-11-23\/1368\">Holy Cow, the Gardens at\nKyoto's Eikando Temple are Gorgeous!<\/a>&#8221; post... it's one of those\n0.5&times; &#8220;macros&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n<p>But I don't have any of those. <span class='nobr'>The Nikkor<\/span> 85mm <span\nclass='f'>f<\/span>\/1.4 that <span class='nobr'>I used<\/span> in <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-04-05\/1488\">this &#8220;Anthony Tipping Point&#8221;\npost<\/a> is only 0.11&times;, and the <span class='nobr'>Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 used in <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-04-12\/1490\">this &#8220;Icy Water&#8221; post<\/a> is\njust 0.16&times;. super-tele-zoom. <span\nclass='nobr'>I found<\/span> myself wanting to nudge up the sharpening in\nLightroom just <span class='nobr'>a tad<\/span> on all of these, but <span class='nobr'>I left<\/span> most of them at\nLightroom's default settings to demonstrate what you get out of the camera.\n<span class='nobr'>I did add<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a touch<\/span> of extra sharpening to the\nblossoms &amp; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_030800.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Backlit Blossoms<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>This photo isn't much on the artistic side, but <span class='nobr'>I include<\/span> it because it\nshows that you can get not-horrible sharpness. <span class='nobr'>The bit of<\/span> extra sharpening <span class='nobr'>I added<\/span>\nin Lightroom makes the veins on the backlit blossoms pop just <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> extra.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the other hand, this next shot looked fairly mushy without the same\namount of extra sharpening.
