It's been an absolutely horrible cherry-blossom season in Kyoto, with constant cold and rain<\/a>\n(and snow!<\/a>). Today\nwas still cold and windy, but at least it was finally sunny, so the\ntourists were out in force.<\/p>\n\n

It is, of course, the same movie shoot that I posted<\/span>\nabout<\/a> the other day, for the film\n\n \u300c\u30de\u30b6\u30fc\u30a6\u30a9\u30fc\u30bf\u30fc\u300d<\/span>\n\n(“Mother Water”, whatever that means), which has been filming in Kyoto<\/a> for the last\nweek. (At least that was the plan before the horrible weather.) I thought<\/span>\nthat they had finished up the other day, but apparently not.<\/p>\n\n

The area around here turns into a parking<\/span> lot<\/a>\nduring this time of year, and as I returned<\/span> from an errand on my scooter,\nit was even more crowded than usual, due, I soon found<\/span> out, to the shoot. I\ndon't<\/span> know how long they'd been shooting here, but they finished up soon\nafter I arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It made for an interesting logistical problem for the filmmakers... it's\na crowded<\/span> public place, made more crowded by gawkers watching what they're\ndoing, and at the moment they were trying to film long shots without<\/i> the\ncrowd in them, so they have to find a time<\/span> when no one is anywhere in the\nbackground. That will never happen on its own during this time of year\n(they were smack dab in the middle of a prime<\/span> photogenic cherry-blossom\nzone), but they had a staff<\/span> of 40+ people, half of which it seemed were for\ncrowd control, politely shutting down the sidewalk for a minute<\/span> at a time<\/span>\nwhile a shot<\/span> was made after a flurry<\/span> of “;\u672c\u756a!<\/span>” shouts (“real\nthing!<\/i>”) up and down the area to let everyone know that a real<\/span> shot was\nabout to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n

I didn't recognize the actress at the time, but when I got<\/span> home and\nlooked at my shots, I recognized<\/span> her as Satomi Kobayashi<\/a>\n\n(\u5c0f\u6797\u8061\u7f8e<\/a>).<\/span>\n\nOr, I should<\/span> say, I recognized<\/span> her as the shopkeeper in Kamome Diner<\/a>\n\n (\u304b\u3082\u3081\u98df\u5802<\/a>),<\/span>\n\nbut even that was only due to the context, so I guess<\/span> I just<\/span> don't have\nmuch star-struck mojo.<\/p>\n\n\n

The guy in the background of the shot above was the staff member that\nI'd had a nice<\/span> chat with the other day<\/a>. While I\nwas<\/span> there today it turned out that I was<\/span> able to do a favor<\/span> for the lead\nproduction assistant, and while chatting with him I asked<\/span> who the guy was\nthat I'd talked to before, and it turns out that he's the producer<\/a>. That\nexplains why he appeared to not actually be doing any work during the shoot\n:-), but I can't<\/span> imagine that a Hollywood<\/span> producer would ever chit-chat at\nlength with a random<\/span> stranger at a movie<\/span> shoot like that, so I thought<\/span> it\nwas nice.<\/p>\n\n

Did you notice the big mic boom and “dead cat” (big fuzzy microphone\nwindscreen) in the first shot of this post? I lead with<\/span> that as a cookie<\/span>\nfor the observant. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n

And while I do like taking pictures of people taking pictures (as\nevidenced here<\/a> and many\nother posts on my blog), I'm not immune<\/span> to the charms of the blossoms\nthemselves. Heck, I've even written poetry about cherry\nblossoms<\/a>. So, here's a shot<\/span> I snapped<\/span> in passing that I sort<\/span> of like...\nit's got an odd 3D effect to it, at least when viewed at full size...<\/p>\n\n\n
