0.4 sec handheld, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.8, ISO 6400 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_030262bw.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_030262bw.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Cherry Blossoms over the Shirakawa River<\/span>\n<br\/>Kyoto, Japan\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Considering the <a href=\"\/blog\/2010-03-29\/1483\">wild,\nfreaky presentations<\/a> I've been <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2010-03-27\/1482\">posting recently<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd lead off today with something quiet and simple.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had stepped out earlier this evening to check out <span class='nobr'>a movie<\/span> shoot going\non near my place, and snapped the shot above on the spur of the moment. <span class='nobr'>It was well<\/span> after sunset, so the sky was <span class='nobr'>a deep,<\/span> rich blue, and the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-02-02\/141\">main gate of the Heian\nShrine<\/a> <span class='nobr'>a deep,<\/span> rich orange, and the reflections in the water <span class='nobr'>a mix<\/span> of\nrich colors (blue from the sky, green from the street lights). <span class='nobr'>All and all<\/span>\nit was &#8220;rich&#8221;, but seeing as I've posted that kind of shot before (both <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-04-18\/180\">from around this same location<\/a>\nand from <a href=\"\/blog\/2009-04-05\/1178\">the nearby canal<\/a>), <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd give this one <span class='nobr'>a try<\/span> as black &amp; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>80 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.8, ISO 6400 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_030234.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_030234.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Evening Movie Shoot<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>They were shooting scenes from <span class='nobr'>a movie<\/span> to be called\n\n  <span class='nobr'>\u300e<a href=\"http:\/\/eiga.com\/buzz\/20100329\/17\/\">\u30de\u30b6\u30fc\u30a6\u30a9\u30fc\u30bf\u30fc<\/a>\u300f<\/span>\n\n(&#8220;Mother Water&#8221;, whatever that means). <span class='nobr'>It's the same<\/span> group that did the\nslightly eccentric comedy\n\n   <span class='nobr'>\u300e\u304b\u3082\u3081\u98df\u5802\u300f<\/span> (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kamome_Shokudo\">Kamome Diner<\/a>&#8221;),\n\nwhich we liked.<\/p>\n\n<p>I didn't want to be in the way, so went off some distance to grab <span class='nobr'>a shot<\/span>\nof the scene (the shot you see above, with <span class='nobr'>a guy<\/span> in the middle of the river\nholding <span class='nobr'>a big<\/span> microphone, and the camera at the edge of the water on the\nleft). <span class='nobr'>It was dark<\/span> so <span class='nobr'>I couldn't<\/span> really see what was going on, but in\nlooking at the shot now, <span class='nobr'>I see that<\/span> the camera is pointed right at me,\nalong with the gaze of everyone, with smiles on their faces.<\/p>\n\n<p>This explains why moments after taking the shot, someone came up to me\nand asked very politely whether <span class='nobr'>I might<\/span> stand <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> off to the side for <span class='nobr'>a\nminute<\/span> or two while they filmed <span class='nobr'>a shot.<\/span>.. doh! During that time the same\nguy stopped <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> random passers by, also requesting very politely that\nthey pause for just <span class='nobr'>a minute.<\/span> (Judging by when they did\/didn't do this, they\nseemed to have filmed for only about two minutes during the half hour <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span>\nthere... <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of effort by 40 people for so little!).<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight'><a name=\"030253\" href=\"\/i\/JF7_030253.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_030253_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"( it was really quite dark; this shot is highly overexposed ) -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2010 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i030253\"\ntitle=\"( it was really quite dark; this shot is highly overexposed ) -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2010 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Nikkor 70-200mm f\/2.8 @ 200 mm &mdash; 0.3 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.8, ISO 6400 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_030253.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_030253.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='subtle-less'>( it was really quite dark; this shot is highly overexposed )<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>They were actually shooting on real film, not digital, but they did have\nsome kind of digital recording going as well, so they could check out\nframing and such in real time. <span class='nobr'>In the shot<\/span> above, they're sitting in front\nof <span class='nobr'>a local<\/span> <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-11-14\/635\">shrine that was\ndecommissioned<\/a> <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> years ago, checking out framing on <span class='nobr'>a monitor<\/span> for\ntheir next shot.<\/p>\n\n<p>I chatted with one of the staff members for <span class='nobr'>a while<\/span> (the tall blur in\nthe shot above) who said that they use film for its wider dynamic range. <span class='nobr'>He did say<\/span> that they also do shoot stuff with <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_camera\">Red<\/a> digital movie\ncameras, though <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> know whether he was referring to this project\nspecifically. (This group was friendlier and more conscientious than the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-09-17\/938\">previous movie shoot<\/a> in\nthis area... <span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> it comes with being more professional.)<\/p>\n\n<p>While standing around, <span class='nobr'>I snapped<\/span> another shot of the river as it passed\nby some <a href=\"\/blog\/2009-11-15\/1360\">old buildings <span class='nobr'>I\nposted<\/span> last fall<\/a>.
