Considering the wild,\nfreaky presentations<\/a> I've been posting recently<\/a>, I thought<\/span> I'd lead off today with something quiet and simple.<\/p>\n\n

I had stepped out earlier this evening to check out a movie<\/span> shoot going\non near my place, and snapped the shot above on the spur of the moment. It was well<\/span> after sunset, so the sky was a deep,<\/span> rich blue, and the main gate of the Heian\nShrine<\/a> a deep,<\/span> rich orange, and the reflections in the water a mix<\/span> of\nrich colors (blue from the sky, green from the street lights). All and all<\/span>\nit was “rich”, but seeing as I've posted that kind of shot before (both from around this same location<\/a>\nand from the nearby canal<\/a>), I thought<\/span> I'd give this one a try<\/span> as black & white.<\/p>\n\n

It's not too bad for a half-second exposure at 70mm, hand-held,\nfreestanding.<\/p>\n\n\n

They were shooting scenes from a movie<\/span> to be called\n\n \u300e\u30de\u30b6\u30fc\u30a6\u30a9\u30fc\u30bf\u30fc<\/a>\u300f<\/span>\n\n(“Mother Water”, whatever that means). It's the same<\/span> group that did the\nslightly eccentric comedy\n\n \u300e\u304b\u3082\u3081\u98df\u5802\u300f<\/span> (“Kamome Diner<\/a>”),\n\nwhich we liked.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't want to be in the way, so went off some distance to grab a shot<\/span>\nof the scene (the shot you see above, with a guy<\/span> in the middle of the river\nholding a big<\/span> microphone, and the camera at the edge of the water on the\nleft). It was dark<\/span> so I couldn't<\/span> really see what was going on, but in\nlooking at the shot now, I see that<\/span> the camera is pointed right at me,\nalong with the gaze of everyone, with smiles on their faces.<\/p>\n\n

This explains why moments after taking the shot, someone came up to me\nand asked very politely whether I might<\/span> stand a bit<\/span> off to the side for a\nminute<\/span> or two while they filmed a shot.<\/span>.. doh! During that time the same\nguy stopped a few<\/span> random passers by, also requesting very politely that\nthey pause for just a minute.<\/span> (Judging by when they did\/didn't do this, they\nseemed to have filmed for only about two minutes during the half hour I was<\/span>\nthere... a lot<\/span> of effort by 40 people for so little!).<\/p>\n\n

They were actually shooting on real film, not digital, but they did have\nsome kind of digital recording going as well, so they could check out\nframing and such in real time. In the shot<\/span> above, they're sitting in front\nof a local<\/span> shrine that was\ndecommissioned<\/a> a few<\/span> years ago, checking out framing on a monitor<\/span> for\ntheir next shot.<\/p>\n\n

I chatted with one of the staff members for a while<\/span> (the tall blur in\nthe shot above) who said that they use film for its wider dynamic range. He did say<\/span> that they also do shoot stuff with Red<\/a> digital movie\ncameras, though I don't<\/span> know whether he was referring to this project\nspecifically. (This group was friendlier and more conscientious than the previous movie shoot<\/a> in\nthis area... I guess<\/span> it comes with being more professional.)<\/p>\n\n

While standing around, I snapped<\/span> another shot of the river as it passed\nby some old buildings I\nposted<\/span> last fall<\/a>. This is looking in the opposite direction, from a bit<\/span>\nfurther downstream, as the lead shot in this post....<\/p>\n\n
