\nAnthony's Graduating First-Grade Class<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

Anthony finished first grade on Friday, capping a year<\/span> of very big\nevents in a little<\/span> boy's life. The picture<\/span> above includes self portraits of\nhis teacher and of all the kids in his class.<\/p>\n\n

Can you guess which is his?<\/p>\n\n

The Japanese school year runs from April to March, and so it was a year<\/span>\nago that he graduated from\nkindergarten<\/a> in a big<\/span> ceremony with lots of pomp and circumstance. Then\nin April he started first\ngrade<\/a>, and soon was taking the city bus on his\nown<\/a> to school in the morning, and home in the afternoon<\/a>.\nUnlike in the three years of preschool, he had real responsibilities, with\nlots of school stuff<\/a>\nand a very<\/span> new (and disliked) concept: homework<\/a>, including and a\ndaily diary<\/a> for class,\nand English reading<\/a>\nwith me.<\/p>\n\n

But with new responsibilities comes new benefits, such as\nallowance<\/a>\nand big-kid sports play<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It was also a year that saw his first (and last) shichi-go-san<\/i>\nevent<\/a> (and portrait<\/a>), turning seven years old<\/a>,\nand trips to Tokyo\nDisneyland<\/a> and the amazing KidZania<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Growing up fast, but not too old to set out a plate<\/span> of cookies\nfor Santa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
