This cold I've had for the last week and a half<\/span> seems to be getting a\nbit<\/span> better, but it's been a killer,<\/span> flip-flopping me between sleeping all\nday due to lack of energy, and wanting to sleep all day but not being able\nto due to insomnia. A few days<\/span> ago I was<\/span> an absolute zombie from having not\nslept for two days, but got enough of a second<\/span> wind that I decided<\/span> to try\nto get out a bit<\/span> into Nature, to see whether that would refresh me a\nbit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I brought the Zoom H4n<\/a>\nhigh-quality audio recorder that I mentioned<\/span> in yesterday's post<\/a>, to try\nto practice with it a bit,<\/span> heading to a mountain<\/span> trail that runs along (and\nsometimes through) a small<\/span> stream, far away from any sounds of the city. I wanted<\/span> to try recordings of the babbling stream with various audio-recorder\nsettings, so I could<\/span> get a sense<\/span> for how to use the unit.<\/p>\n\n

The picture above was one of the first tests. I had forgotten<\/span> to bring\nmy headphones, so I couldn't<\/span> tell what kind of result I was<\/span> getting. I recorded<\/span> at uncompressed 96kHz 24bit-per-channel stereo (far higher quality\nthan CDs), but it didn't really matter... it was just a stream.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For what it's worth, here's the recording I got<\/span> from the setup above (as\na one<\/span>-minute mp3)....<\/p>\n\n

I've seen many before at other places (<a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-07-03\/509\">the top of Mt. The &#8220;railing&#8221;\nis worse than nothing because it is not even as sturdy as it looks (and it\nlooks completely unsturdy), so it gives <span class='nobr'>a false<\/span> sense of safety, as\nminuscule as it may be. <span class='nobr'>The logs were<\/span> just as rotten and spongy as those\nbefore, but this time they were three times as long, and actually spanned <span class='nobr'>a\ndangerous<\/span> void. <span class='nobr'>One foot ventured<\/span> out onto the bridge about the same\ndistance, and sanity caught up with me and <span class='nobr'>I decided<\/span> to take the other\npath.<\/p>\n\n<p>Every once in a while I'd see <span class='nobr'>a different<\/span> situation in which <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span>\ntest the recorder.
