Now that I've finished\nup<\/a> my posts about taking seven-year-old Anthony\non his first real ski trip<\/a>, I can get<\/span> back to the story of our short New-Year's trip<\/a>\nto Toyama Prefecture, a few<\/span> hours' drive north of Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

My last post about the trip was the one-off “Deceptively Clear:\nSnow-Covered Mountains in Exquisite Detail<\/a>”, but the ongoing\nstory was in the middle of our second-day visit to picturesque Gokayama\nVillage<\/a>, where we'd left off having had some hot noodles<\/a> at restaurant “Yohachi”<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

To remind you, it was very snowy...<\/p>\n\n\n

Anthony decided to pretend a snowball was a baby<\/span> and he was the daddy. The snowball<\/span> was named “pu-chan” (“little pu”).<\/p>\n\n

We got back up to the car, brushed off a couple<\/span> of inches of snow, and\ntook the snow-white almost-deserted turnpike south for 10 slow miles to our\nnext destination. After exiting the toll booth, I paused<\/span> to snap some\npicture...<\/p>\n\n

The actual highway we'd taken was more like the left lanes in this\nphoto. The well-worn right lane is the exit, and I'm guessing it's got so\nmuch more traffic due to people coming from the opposite direction deciding\nthat this is a good<\/span> place to get off the highway. This exit is the first\nafter a long<\/span> 8-mile tunnel through the mountains to the south, so perhaps\nthose heading north got a surprise<\/span> they weren't expecting upon exit from\nthe tunnel, and decided to bail.<\/p>\n\n

This is also the location where I took<\/span> the last two photos in my “Shutter Speed's\nEffect on Falling Snow<\/a>” post a few<\/span> weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n

For completeness, here's the view from the same spot looking down the\nexit off-ramp, which descends sharply down the mountain to a river<\/span> valley\nbelow....<\/p>\n\n

The morning drive had started snowy<\/a>, and now\njust after lunch it was much worse.... but there was more to come. Much,\nmuch more...<\/p>\n\n
