After installing\n<b>52<\/b> security updates, rebooting, installing Service Pack 2,\nrebooting, then installing the cumulative SP2 security updates (Lord knows\nhow many in there), and rebooting again, my machine is now just as flaky\nas it was last September. Sigh.\n<\/p>\n\n<center>&#8220;<b>WindowsUpdate&trade; -- keep up\nto date on all the latest bugs and inconveniences.<\/b>&#8221;<\/center>\n\n<p>\n\nDespite the clear connection between WindowsUpdate and the problems, <span class='nobr'>I believe<\/span> it's somehow also related to my hardware, and that if <span class='nobr'>I replace<\/span> it\n<span class='nobr'>I might<\/span> extract myself from this mess. My <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.unixwiz.net\/blog\/\">brother<\/a> has had good luck with\nDell, so <span class='nobr'>I point<\/span> my Firefox browser over to <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www1.jp.dell.com\/content\/default.aspx?c=jp&amp;l=jp&amp;s=gen\">Dell\nJapan<\/a> to check out their systems. <span class='nobr'>I see one<\/span> that looks nice and click\non the &#8220;configure&#8221; link, and am graced with this page:\n<\/p>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/shame-on-dell.gif\" width=\"680\" height=\"298\"\nalt=\"screenshot of Dell's shameful browser handling\"\nclass=\"ic\"\nid=\"ishame_on_dell\"\nstyle=\"border: 1px solid orange\"\ntitle=\"screenshot of Dell's shameful browser handling\"\/>\n\n<p>\n\nYou don't need to be able to read Japanese to see right away that they are morons. Sigh.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nLuckily, there's the most excellent <a\nhref=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/extensions\/moreinfo.php?id=59\">User-agent\nSwitcher<\/a> extension to Firefox, which is always have on hand. <span class='nobr'>I tell Firefox<\/span>\nto tell the Dell website that it's Internet Explorer, and the Dell site is then\nhappy to let me in, and everything works just fine.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> My horribly flaky hardware had a resurgence of horribleness yesterday with my ill-conceived idea to windowsupdate the thing.
