This is great news if you're into photography, even if, like me,\nyou've never used Aperture.<\/p>\n\n<p>The list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/aperture\/features\/\">features\nin <span class='nobr'>Aperture 3.0<\/span><\/a> shares many things with what Lightroom already has, but\nincludes plenty that Lightroom doesn't have (geoencoding, video support,\nand face recognition are <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> of the headline features, but it's actually\nin the small details that one often finds salve to <span class='nobr'>a workflow<\/span>\nirritation).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>People can get polarized about their personal choice of application\n(much like the stupid &#8220;my camera brand is so much better than yours&#8221;\narguments one finds everywhere), but the reality &mdash; the &#8220;great news&#8221;\n&mdash; is that an advance for one player ups the game for all, leading to\n<span class='nobr'>a win<\/span>-win down the line for everyone. <span class='nobr'>You can be<\/span> sure that the Apple folks\nkeep <span class='nobr'>a keen<\/span> eye on what Adobe does and how it's accepted in the\nmarketplace, and vice-versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class='ic wide'><a name=\"015939\" href=\"\/i\/JF7_015939.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_015939_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"Can't We All Just Get Along? -- Otsu Prince Hotel -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i015939\"\ntitle=\"Can't We All Just Get Along? -- Otsu Prince Hotel -- Otsu, Shiga, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Nikkor 24-70mm f\/2.8 @ 70 mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>100 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.8, ISO 640 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_015939.jpg\">full exif<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Can't We All Just Get Along?<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Personally, <span class='nobr'>I own stock<\/span> in both companies so maybe I'm covered either\nway, but it's Adobe Lightroom that I <i>use<\/i> every single day and would\nbe completely lost without, so <span class='nobr'>I wouldn't<\/span> want Aperture to grow so much\nthat Lightroom lost enough market share for Adobe to give up on it.\nConversely, <span class='nobr'>I benefit<\/span> from <span class='nobr'>a healthy<\/span> Aperture because it keeps alive one of\nthe many fires under the collective Lightroom butt, spurring them on to <span class='nobr'>a\nbetter<\/span> product. <span class='nobr'>In a one<\/span>-pony race, the winner doesn't have to run very\nfast to win, so in the end, some healthy competition is good for all.<\/p>\n\n<p>Aperture has a much smaller market share than Lightroom, and for <span class='nobr'>a long<\/span>\ntime Apple seemed to be letting Aperture wither on the vine, so it's good\nto see <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> release shake things up <span class='nobr'>a bit.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I know of<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> &#8220;celebrity\nphotographers&#8221; (in the sense that their popularity on the web makes them\ncelebrities among photographers) that use Aperture. <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/blog.chasejarvis.com\/\">Chase Jarvis<\/a>, always full of\ninfectious enthusiasm, <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/blog.chasejarvis.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/apple-aperture-30-awesomeness.html\">gushes\nabout the new features in <span class='nobr'>Aperture 3<\/span><\/a>. Last <span class='nobr'>I heard,<\/span> <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/blog.vincentlaforet.com\/\">Vincent Laforet<\/a> was still using\nAperture, though as of this writing hasn't posted anything about <span class='nobr'>Aperture\n3.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>He's really<\/span> into <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dslr\">dSLR<\/a>\nvidography these days, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't chime in with his\ntake on Aperture's new video support.<\/p>\n\n<p>As for me, how I got to where <span class='nobr'>I am<\/span> in this context is perhaps\ninteresting, so I'll share that in <a href=\"\/blog\/2010-02-10\/1452\">another post<\/a> (that\ncontains all kinds of disclaimers and juicy tidbits, such as why I've never\nused Aperture, and how many times I've been on Apple's and Adobe's\npayroll).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='ic wide'><a name=\"031430\" href=\"\/i\/JEF_031430.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_031430_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nalt=\"Just.
