Having mostly conquered the ability to drive in snow<\/a> on our\nrecent trip to snowy\nToyama Prefecture<\/a>, four hours' drive north of Kyoto, I thought<\/span> to see\nwhether I could<\/span> enhance my ability to take photographs in the snow. At our first<\/span> big stop in the snow, the historic Gokayama\nVillage<\/a>, while Anthony played on a slight<\/span> hill covered with a lot<\/span> of\nsnow, I tried<\/span> different shutter speeds so that I could<\/span> inspect the effect\nthey had in capturing the moving snow.<\/p>\n\n

The results are not too useful in an absolute basis because snow falls\nat different speeds, ranging from a driving<\/span> blizzard down to the very slow,\nsilent fall on a calm<\/span> morning where it seems as if the snow is falling in\nbullet time<\/a>.\n(Memories from when I was<\/span> a kid,<\/span> of delivering newspapers at 3am on a\ndead<\/span>-still Ohio Sunday morning during this kind of snow are very fond...\nwell, except for the whole “delivering newspapers” and “3am” parts.)<\/p>\n\n

It also depends on the focal length used, and I was<\/span> not consistent.<\/p>\n\n

Also working against these results is the haphazard way I did<\/span> them. I\nthought<\/span> “hey, maybe I'll try different shutter speeds”, asked Anthony to\nstand still for a bit,<\/span> and took some shots. No planning, no tripod, no\nskill... just blessed ignorance.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, inspecting how the falling snow looks in each of these shots\ngives some ideas about what to expect.... something very slow like 1\/20th or\n1\/30th of a second<\/span> gives a great<\/span> snowfall effect, at the cost of added\nworry about camera shake and the movement of other items in the scene....<\/p>\n\n
