The day\nwe arrived up north<\/a> in Toyama Prefecture at the start of a short<\/span> New\nYear trip, it was clear and sunny, but that was pretty much the last sun we\nsaw until on the we came home. We woke up<\/span> the next morning to find that it\nhad apparently just started snowing hard... there was only a bit<\/span> of new\naccumulation, but no let up in sight.<\/p>\n\n

So we headed off to our planned destination for the day, which entailed\na drive<\/span> through the mountains. It would<\/span> have taken about 45 minutes in\nclear weather, but since we were getting some snow, we took it slow.<\/p>\n\n

Much of the way early on turned out to be in open-sided tunnels, built\njust to protect against snow, so not only could we go normal speeds, we\ncould stop to take pictures out the side of the tunnel, from the un-snowy\nconfines just inside. That was the occasion when I took<\/span> the photo above,\nalong with the tighter zoom seen in an earlier post as our theme for the\ntrip<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

One thing I like about these is that the background is not clear...\nthere's something<\/i> back there. Pulling back for a wider<\/span> shot makes it\napparent...<\/p>\n\n

Perhaps it's not really that apparent... the tree in the foreground is\nfairly near, but the entire background is the far face of a valley,<\/span> with a\nbig<\/span> river out of view in between. Anyway, I thought<\/span> it was pretty.<\/p>\n\n

The snow was coming down relentlessly, so the breaks between the tunnels\nwere filling out fast. I stepped<\/span> out from where I took<\/span> those photos to take\nthis one:<\/p>\n\n

It looks dark inside (and compared to the field of white outside, it\nwas), but the outside-facing wall of the tunnel was open the entire way, so\nit was quite pleasant to drive on a snowy<\/span> day.<\/p>\n\n

The next tunnel started pretty much right away.... looking the other way\nfrom the same spot:<\/p>\n\n

Eventually the snow-shield tunnels stopped, and the roads got steeper,\nand driving became substantially less pleasant. 10km and 45 minutes later,\nconditions were worse... here's another backward\/forward pair:<\/p>\n\n

It was a relief to get to the little town because all the roads were\nsnow-free... because they were continuously sprayed with water (!), just\nlike the roads in\nKinosaki<\/a> we saw last year. I suddenly<\/span> had much<\/i> appreciation for\nthe method.<\/p>\n\n

The snow continued to come down hard, but eventually we made it to our\ndestination, which offered quite a bit<\/span> to enjoy, though it looks totally\nbleak in this particular photo:<\/p>\n\n\n
